Domaine Hubert Lignier

Domaine Hubert Lignier is a family-run estate in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the Côte de Nuits, whose origins date back to 1885. It cultivates 11 hectares spread across the Côte de Nuits and several appellations in the Côte de Beaune. Laurent Lignier now manages the estate and the winemaking process, which has been certified organic since 2019.

Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins to early 1885, when Jacques Lignier, then a foreman at a Côte de Nuits estate, acquired plots affected by phylloxera. His son Jules subsequently helped to replant the vineyard and passed this legacy on to his sons, including Henri Lignier. Henri developed his own estate, which reached 4.5 hectares by 1960. His son Hubert took over the estate in 1959 and gradually expanded it through the purchase and exchange of plots. In 1973, he introduced on-site bottling. Romain Lignier joined his father in 1992, when the estate covered 7.5 hectares, and played a key role in the return to traditional soil cultivation methods. Following Romain’s death in 2004, Laurent Lignier joined his parents and took over the running of the estate from 2006. A new winery was built in Morey-Saint-Denis in 2008. The estate began using synthetic-free methods in 2007, began the transition to organic farming in 2016 and obtained AB certification in 2019. The estate covered 11 hectares by 2020; Laurent Lignier oversees the winemaking, whilst Sébastien and Maëlle Lignier are gradually becoming involved.

Cuvée

MCMLV

A distinct cuvée from Clos de la Roche Grand Cru originating from a parcel in Les Monts Luisants planted in 1955 using massal selection from the estate. Its frequently millerandé grapes yield concentrated juice, and production is limited to a few hundred bottles per year. The estate vinifies and ages it separately, then presents it with a specific label designed by Joyce Delimata.

Origin of the cuvée name
MCMLV corresponds to 1955 in Roman numerals, the year the parcel was planted, and pays tribute to Henri Lignier, who originated this massal selection.
Cuvée creation year
2017
Style of the cuvée
A concentrated and profound Clos de la Roche, characterized by the purity of ripe fruit, a velvety texture, mineral freshness, and a long finish with saline accents.
Position within the range
A rare parcel-selection cuvée, distinct from the classic Clos de la Roche and positioned at the pinnacle of the estate's range.

Histoire de la cuvée

The parcel in Les Monts Luisants was planted in 1955 with vines from the estate's best vineyards, selected, prepared, and grafted by Henri Lignier. It was isolated to create the MCMLV cuvée starting with the 2017 vintage.

Parcelle & terroir

Clos-de-la-Roche

Clos de la Roche is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically delimited winegrowing terroir located solely within the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis. Its area includes the lieu-dit Clos de la Roche, which is now devoid of walls despite its name, as well as all or part of six neighboring lieux-dits: Les Chabiots, Les Fremières, Les Froichots, Les Genavrières, Les Mochamps, and Monts Luisants. The parcels occupy the lower half of the Côte, between 270 and 300 meters in altitude, on shallow and well-draining soils. The east-facing exposure, sometimes slightly east-south-east, is officially described for all neighboring Grands Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis rather than for this single area alone.

Vineyard commune
Morey-Saint-Denis
Origin of the vineyard name
The name "Roche" is attributed to the large blocks of stone present in the terroir.
Altitude
270–300 m
Slope
Gentle in the lower part of the relief
Soil
Slightly developed soils, generally carbonatated, shallow, clayey, and well-draining, with scree, clays, and red silts.
Subsoil and geology
Bajocian entroquitic limestones in the lower part, intermediate marly level, and hard yet frost-susceptible Bathonian limestone towards the top.

Histoire de la parcelle

In 1860, the Viticultural Committee of the arrondissement of Beaune classified the lieu-dit Clos de la Roche and all or part of the neighboring lieux-dits as first class. The Clos de la Roche appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognized by the decree of December 8, 1936, with its area incorporating the main lieu-dit and neighboring parcels in accordance with historical usages. The terroir has long been divided among numerous owners, a land-ownership feature characteristic of this part of Morey-Saint-Denis.

The second iteration of a new cuvée for the domaine is the 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée MCMLV, a bottling that evokes that date this parcel in Monts Luisants—purchased with inherited money and despite family skepticism by Laurent Lignier's grandmother, who chose it because it never frosted—was planted with an old massale sélection. Lignier produced two barrels, using the fruit of vines from the original planting that yielded a mere 17 hectoliters per hectare. A magical bottle in the making, for anyone able to find one, the wine offers up a deep bouquet of cassis, wild blueberries and cherries, complemented by hints of smoked meats, peonies and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's both more intense and livelier than the domaine's regular—and formidable—Clos de la Roche, structured around rich, powdery tannin and concluding with a long, mineral finish.
