Domaine Georges Roumier

Domaine Georges Roumier is a family-run estate based in Chambolle-Musigny, in the Côte de Nuits. Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, it is now run by his grandson Christophe Roumier, alongside his sister Delphine. Its vineyards, comprising approximately 12.5 hectares under direct management, extend across Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin and Corton-Charlemagne, amongst others.

Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, following his marriage to Geneviève Quanquin, who came from a family that owned vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. Georges Roumier then settled in the village and gradually developed the family estate in the Côte de Nuits. He was one of the winemakers who bottled their own wines on the estate, at a time when this practice was still relatively uncommon. His son Jean-Marie officially succeeded him in 1961. In the 1950s, the estate expanded to include vineyards in Bonnes-Mares and the Clos de la Bussière in Morey-Saint-Denis, a 2.59-hectare plot acquired in 1953. A plot of Corton-Charlemagne was added to the estate in 1968. Jean-Marie Roumier then acquired a plot of Musigny Grand Cru in 1978. Christophe Roumier, a graduate in oenology, joined his father in the early 1980s, and the entire harvest has been bottled at the estate since the 1983 vintage. Since Jean-Marie’s retirement in 1990, Christophe Roumier has managed the estate and overseen the winemaking. The estate has also strengthened its independence by purchasing vineyards previously farmed under lease or sharecropping arrangements, notably in Charmes-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. Chemical fertilisers were phased out in 1988, followed by herbicides in 1989; however, the estate is not certified organic.

Parcelle & terroir

Les Amoureuses

Les Amoureuses is a climat officially classified as a Premier Cru of the AOC Chambolle-Musigny, located immediately below the Musigny grand cru. Its morphology is heterogeneous: an upper southeastern-facing appendage precedes a main section curving from southeast to south, where the slope softens significantly towards the bottom. The shallow clay soil rests on a compact limestone substrate. The geology varies with altitude, with Calcaire de Comblanchien dominating in the upper two-thirds, while the lower third rests on Calcaire de Prémeaux and Marnes à Ostrea acuminata.

According to the BIVB, the name likely comes from the Burgundian expression describing as "amoureuse" (amorous) a clayey soil that sticks to one's feet when wet. Other interpretations exist, without absolute etymological certainty.

Histoire de la parcelle

Les Amoureuses was already listed among the "first cuvées" of Chambolle in Jules Lavalle's classification published in 1855, right after Musigny and Petits-Musigny classified as head of cuvée. The AOC Chambolle-Musigny was recognized by decree on September 11, 1936. The specific parcel area granting the right to the Premier Cru designation was approved by the INAO on June 1 and 2, 1988, and the official specifications explicitly cite Les Amoureuses among the classified climats.

The order in which Roumier elects to pour surely reflects not just Chambolle chauvinism, but a belief in the Grand Cru quality of his 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses. There are certainly indications of this in the glass, but the wine is suffering from a slight, temporary reduction. This enhances the gamey and smoky side of the nose, but there is ample concentration of black raspberry along with narcissus and iris florality as well. In the mouth, one is rewarded with prodigious, persistent, fascinatingly complex animality and floral perfume, pointed ripe-yet-tart black fruits, a fine-grained structure, and palpable mineral extract. The finish is strikingly energetic and penetrating, even though one senses a slight reductive corset on the fruit. This will certainly become a profound wine, best revisited only after a decade in bottle. One senses that Christophe Roumier considers 2005 a high point of his career, and my visit with him was among the high points of my recent trip. He describes this as “a classic vintage lending itself to very calm, classic vinification,” which given the opportunities afforded by perfectly healthy, firm, dry, ripe fruit involved triage almost solely to remove ladybugs, and included around 25% whole clusters in the fermenters at the Premier Cru level and 50% at that of Grand Cru. Super-fruity seductive aroma with more body than the Ruchottes. Rounder, more beguiling. Spreads across the palate. Exceptionally fine tannins. Very complete nose. Roumier says that at this stage Amoureuses is so aromatically powerful that it can easily dominate the entire cellar. Stunning.
