Histoire du domaine

The Chave family’s history in Rhône winegrowing dates back to 1481, following the allocation of land by a local lord at the end of the 15th century. The family’s origins lie on the hillsides that today correspond to the Saint-Joseph appellation. Gérard Chave took over the family estate in 1970 and consolidated its portfolio of plots on the Hermitage hill. Jean-Louis Chave joined his father in 1992, after studying in the United States, including a course in oenology at the University of California, Davis. He represents the sixteenth generation of the family and now runs the estate, whilst Gérard Chave remains involved in its operations. During the 1990s, the estate undertook to reclaim the Bachasson hillside in Saint-Joseph, where the family had historically cultivated vines. In 2009, he acquired Clos Florentin with a view to restoring this wine-growing area, where the vineyards had declined significantly following the phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century. The registered vineyard covers 26 hectares, comprising 21 hectares of red grape varieties and 5 hectares of white grape varieties. Winemaking is overseen by Jean-Louis Chave, with grapes processed on a plot-by-plot basis prior to the estate’s blends.

The exuberant 2007 Hermitage Blanc reveals notes of petroleum, crushed rocks, earth, white currants and peaches, an unctuous texture, high glycerin and good acidity. This big, thick white Hermitage will not be as long lived as the 2009, but for drinking over the next two decades, it is impossible to resist. Jean-Louis and Gerard Chave opened a bottle of the 2003 Hermitage Blanc to give me an idea of how this vintage is aging. This monumental offering, which flirts with perfection, has virtually no acidity and is aging beautifully. The Chaves believe it is a repeat of what Gerard’s father made in 1929. Tasting through the different Hermitage vineyards (including Peleat, Les Beaumes, Meal, l’Ermite and Les Bessards), the lowest score any of these lots received was 94-96 (Les Beaumes). The other parcels all merited 97-100 points. The most dominant component part of Chave’s red Hermitage comes from Les Bessards, which many consider to be the greatest vineyard on Hermitage Hill. The next largest is Meal, a vineyard with a more southerly exposure. While Chave has not made their special cuvee, Cuvee Cathelin, since 2003, I suspect one will emerge from the different lots of Les Bessards that I tasted as 2009 is certainly a year where enough wine can be culled out for the Cathelin without sacrificing the monumental quality of the regular Hermitage. This looks to be one of the wines of the vintage, which is not surprising given the fact that the Chave family has more experience than just about anybody in the winemaking world (the domaine was founded in 1481 - nearly a decade before Christopher Columbus discovered America!). An earlier drinking vintage, this is complex and powerful with plenty of dark stony aromas and gentle dark cherry compote, pepper, ripe plum and chocolate. There is an openness and a softness to the palate with smooth, velvety tannins and a powerful, plum stone finish. Drink now.

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Lots of life, energy and tension on the nose. Even a bit raw, it's so tense and tight. This seems much more youthful than the Guigal Ex Voto 2007 served blind alongside. In the glass this even because a bit austere and severe. Don't open this yet!
