Histoire du domaine
Jean-François de Pontet, a senior magistrate who became governor of the Médoc following a career at Versailles, acquired land north of Pauillac in 1705 with the aim of establishing a vineyard there. In 1757, he purchased an estate in the locality known as Canet. The name Château Pontet-Canet was adopted in 1781 by combining the surname Pontet with the name of the locality. The estate was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification. Henri Herman Cruse acquired the property in 1865 and modernised its facilities; in particular, he commissioned Charles Skawinski to build a wine cellar in 1895. Guy Tesseron, a winegrower and cognac merchant, bought the château in 1975. In 1994, he handed over management to his son, Alfred Tesseron. A conversion to biodynamic farming began on 14 hectares in 2004, before being extended to the entire vineyard. The estate’s wines were awarded organic and biodynamic certification in 2010. Justine Tesseron joined the family business in 2015, whilst Mathieu Bessonnet currently serves as technical director and head of winemaking.
