Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is an estate in Pauillac, in the Médoc, classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé. Its vineyards cover 82 hectares of deep gravelly soil, mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. The château is owned by the three children of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild: Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild.

Histoire du domaine

In the 18th century, the estate belonged successively to the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur and then to the Barons of Brane. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction, and it was subsequently renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. His great-grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, took over the management of the estate in 1922. In 1924, he decided to bottle the entire production at the château, whereas previously the wine had been delivered in barrels to wine merchants. He had the Grand Chai built in 1926 and founded the Baron Philippe de Rothschild company in 1933. From 1945 onwards, the labels for the grand cru were illustrated each year with an original work commissioned from an artist. In 1962, the Museum of Wine in Art was inaugurated at the château. In 1973, Mouton Rothschild was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, having been classified as a second growth in 1855. On the death of Baron Philippe in 1988, his only daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, succeeded him; she launched Aile d’Argent in 1991 and Le Petit Mouton in 1993, before commissioning a new fermentation vat in 2012. Since 2014, the château has been owned by her three children; Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy has been in charge of the technical management of the family’s Bordeaux estates since 2020.

Cuvée

Petit Mouton

Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild. It comes notably from a selection of the youngest vines in the Premier Cru vineyard, the grapes of which are vinified separately. It benefits from care comparable to that of the Grand Vin, with rigorous selection and traditional barrel aging.

Origin of the cuvée name
“Petit Mouton” was the name of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild's residence, located in the heart of the estate.
Cuvée creation year
1993
Style of the cuvée
A red Pauillac seeking elegance, richness, and structure, in an accessible register yet faithful to the estate's style.
Position within the range
Second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild, positioned immediately below the Grand Vin in the estate's red wine range.

Histoire de la cuvée

Created by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the wine appeared for the first time with the 1993 vintage under the name “Le Second Vin de Mouton Rothschild”. As of the 1994 vintage, it adopted its definitive name, Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild. Its label is inspired by a drawing made in 1927 by Jean Carlu.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Le Petit Mouton has a rather austere bouquet with earthy, leathery black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite chewy tannin, plenty of red berry fruit, orange rind and clove, building towards quite a weighty finish that perhaps just lacks the class of more recent vintages. At ten years on, this Deuxième Vin is proving to be longer-lasting than many expected, and even though it is surpassed by more recent, finely-tuned vintages, it remains a satisfying Pauillac. Tasted February 2017.
