Chapoutier L Ermite Ermitage 1999 Magnum
Chapoutier L’Ermite 1999 is a red wine from the Hermitage appellation in the Rhône Valley, produced by Domaine Chapoutier. This cuvée is crafted exclusively from Syrah. Jancis Robinson awards it 17.5+/20 and recommends drinking between 2014 and 2034. Critics describe a particularly concentrated, still tight wine with grain-textured tannins that benefits from decanting and aeration; notes of leather and black fruit accompany a softer palate and a very dry finish.

Histoire du domaine
The company’s origins date back to 1808, with the founding of Calvet et Compagnie on Rue de l’Hermitage in Tain. In 1897, Marius Chapoutier went into partnership with Rodolphe Delépine to form Delépine et Chapoutier, which at that time exported its wines to the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Following Delépine’s departure in 1922, Marius renamed the company Chapoutier et Compagnie. In 1928, he acquired the La Ciboise estate, then in 1929 had a new winery built at the foot of the Hermitage hill. On his death in 1937, his son Marc succeeded him. In 1955, Marc renamed the company M. Chapoutier. Michel Chapoutier took over the management of the company in 1990, having launched the first single-vineyard selections in 1989. The conversion of the vineyard to biodynamic farming began at that time. Under his leadership, the company gradually acquired estates and vineyards in Australia from 1998, in Roussillon in 2000, in Portugal in 2007, and subsequently in Alsace and Spain, amongst other places. Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier have joined Michel and Corinne Chapoutier in the family business; Clément Bartschi currently serves as cellar master there.
L'Ermite
L'Ermite is a single-parcel selection of Ermitage from the very poor granitic terroir surrounding the chapel at the top of the hill. The red is crafted exclusively from Syrah and the white from Marsanne selected from very old vines. Both versions are designed as long-aging wines expressing this summit terroir.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name comes from the lieu-dit L'Ermite, located at the top of the Hermitage hill around the chapel, from which the grapes originate.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1996
- Style of the cuvée
- The red generally displays a deep, structured, and mineral expression of Syrah, with powerful tannins and exceptional aging potential. The white offers a rich, ample, and complex style, balanced by a marked minerality and also intended for prolonged aging.
- Position within the range
- Emblematic single-parcel selection located at the top of the Fac&Spera range by M. Chapoutier.
Histoire de la cuvée
L'Ermite made its debut with the 1996 vintage in the range of single-parcel selections created by Michel Chapoutier. The cuvée has since been marketed as Ermitage red and white from the vines of the lieu-dit L'Ermite around the chapel.
