Domaine Mugnier Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Marechale Blanc 2023 Bouteille (75cl)

The 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale Blanc from Domaine JF Mugnier is a white Burgundy wine from the Clos de la Maréchale climat in the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation. This cuvée is crafted exclusively from Chardonnay. The estate revived this white wine starting with the 2005 vintage by top-grafting older Pinot Noir vines with Chardonnay; approximately 6,000 vines are dedicated to its production. The producer describes a style marked by minerality, power, and nervous tension, featuring expressions of pear and exotic fruits.

Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur maker in Dijon. By the early 20th century, it owned nearly twenty hectares in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges, following the acquisition of the Clos de la Maréchale in 1902. Until 1949, wine production was carried out alongside the family’s liqueur business. From 1878 onwards, the wines were marketed under the Château Chambolle-Musigny label. In 1950, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, the founder’s great-grandson, sold the liqueur business and leased the vineyard – by then reduced in size due to inheritance – to a wine merchant in Nuits-Saint-Georges. He resumed direct management of the Chambolle vineyards from 1978. Upon his death in 1985, his son Frédéric Mugnier took full responsibility for the family estate. In 2004, the reintegration of the Clos de la Maréchale, previously leased out, increased the estate’s size from 4 to 14 hectares. The estate is now owned by Jocelyne and Frédéric Mugnier.

Parcelle & terroir

Clos de la Maréchale [Blanc]

Le Clos de la Maréchale is a walled climat of 9.76 ha, classified as a Premier Cru of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation and located in Premeaux-Prissey. It constitutes a monopoly belonging to the Mugnier family since 1902. The white wine does not correspond to a distinct climat: it comes from Chardonnay top-grafted onto old Pinot Noir vines within the same clos. The soil is described as shallow, with about 50 cm of clay resting on a rocky slab.

Histoire de la parcelle

Known as "Clos des Fourches" in 1855, then "Clos Maréchal" in 1892, the clos has borne its current name since the 20th century. An exclusive property of the Mugnier family since 1902, it was farmed under a lease for 53 years before returning to Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier on November 1, 2003. The tradition of white wine, interrupted for more than fifty years, was re-established starting from the 2005 vintage by top-grafting about 6,000 Pinot Noir vines with Chardonnay.
