Domaine Jadot

Maison Louis Jadot is a wine merchant and producer based in Beaune, Burgundy. Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, it produces wines from its own estates and from grapes sourced from the main Burgundian wine-growing regions, from the Côte d’Or to the Mâconnais and the Beaujolais. The company is owned by the Kopf family; Frédéric Barnier oversees the winemaking.

Histoire du domaine

The Jadot family’s history in the wine industry in Beaune dates back to 1826, with the acquisition of the Clos des Ursules, a Beaune Premier Cru. In 1859, Louis Henry Denis Jadot purchased the wine merchant’s firm Lemaire-Fouleux and renamed it after himself. His son, Louis Baptiste Jadot, continued to expand the business and reinvested in the acquisition of vineyards, particularly Premiers Crus and Grands Crus in the Côte d’Or. On Louis Baptiste’s death in 1939, his son Louis Auguste Jadot took over the management of the company and expanded into export markets, including the United States. André Gagey joined the company in 1954 as Louis Auguste Jadot’s deputy, before becoming managing director following the latter’s death in 1962. In 1970, André Gagey recruited the oenologist Jacques Lardière, who went on to become the company’s technical director. In February 1985, Maison Louis Jadot was acquired by the owners of Kobrand Fine Wine & Spirits, the Kopf family. Pierre-Henry Gagey chaired the company from 1992 to 2023. Frédéric Barnier joined Louis Jadot as technical director in 2010 and succeeded Jacques Lardière in overseeing winemaking in 2012. Since 1 January 2023, Thomas Seiter has been chairman of Maison Louis Jadot and Thibault Gagey has been its managing director.

Parcelle & terroir

Clos-de-la-Roche

Clos de la Roche is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically delimited winegrowing terroir located solely within the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis. Its area includes the lieu-dit Clos de la Roche, which is now devoid of walls despite its name, as well as all or part of six neighboring lieux-dits: Les Chabiots, Les Fremières, Les Froichots, Les Genavrières, Les Mochamps, and Monts Luisants. The parcels occupy the lower half of the Côte, between 270 and 300 meters in altitude, on shallow and well-draining soils. The east-facing exposure, sometimes slightly east-south-east, is officially described for all neighboring Grands Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis rather than for this single area alone.

Histoire de la parcelle

In 1860, the Viticultural Committee of the arrondissement of Beaune classified the lieu-dit Clos de la Roche and all or part of the neighboring lieux-dits as first class. The Clos de la Roche appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognized by the decree of December 8, 1936, with its area incorporating the main lieu-dit and neighboring parcels in accordance with historical usages. The terroir has long been divided among numerous owners, a land-ownership feature characteristic of this part of Morey-Saint-Denis.

Gentle dark-red fruit and a hint of spice, just slightly stalky too. The oak jumps in on the palate and there’s just enough fruit to hold its own with the oak. Dry, just avoids austerity but it does lack fruit in the middle. They have made a good fist of it and in time it should be blossom into something elegant.
