Château Haut Brion 1994 Bouteille (75cl) EA

Château Haut-Brion 1994 is a red wine from Pessac-Léognan, produced in Bordeaux by Château Haut-Brion, owned by Domaines Clarence Dillon and classified as a First Growth in 1855. Its blend consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place from September 12 to 24, following a hot summer punctuated by thunderstorms; September rains accelerated the harvest, which remained overall healthy and ripe. Bottling took place from June 24 to July 10 1996. Wine Spectator awards it 94/100 and The Wine Advocate 92/100, with a drinking window indicated from 2003 to 2024 by the latter publication. Critics describe a harmonious and supple wine with still-present tannins, where dark fruits evolve toward nuances of truffle, earth, spices, dried herbs, and licorice.

Histoire du domaine

The earliest known written reference to a wine identified with the Haut-Brion terroir dates from 1521. In 1533, Jean de Pontac acquired the rights to the noble estate of Haut-Brion, having received part of the land through his marriage to Jeanne de Bellon in 1525. He began construction of the château in 1549 and gradually organised the wine-growing estate. His descendants subsequently built up the wine’s reputation, particularly on the English market in the 17th century. Arnaud III de Pontac expanded the vineyard and contributed to the rise of a style of wine then known as ‘New French Claret’. Following several changes of ownership in the 18th and 19th centuries, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand owned the estate from 1801 to 1804. In 1855, Château Haut-Brion was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé for its red wines, alongside Lafite, Latour and Margaux. The estate has carried out systematic bottling on the premises since 1923. The American banker Clarence Dillon acquired Château Haut-Brion on 13 May 1935 and, together with his nephew Seymour Weller, undertook a modernisation of the buildings and cellars. The Dillon family still owns the estate today through Domaine Clarence Dillon, which has been chaired and managed by Prince Robert of Luxembourg since 2008. Winemaking is currently overseen by the technical team led by Jean-Philippe Masclef, with Florence Forgas as cellar master.

This is one of the surprise sleeper wines of the vintage which has more successes than many people suspect in spite of all the rain. The tremendous drainage enjoyed by the Haut Brion vineyard worked in its favor during this wet September harvest. The color is deep plum/ruby with a bit of lightening at the edge. Notes of compost, truffle, earth, spice box, dried herbs, and licorice compete with sweet black cherry and currant fruit. The wine is medium-bodied, with a relatively plump, chewy feel to it. It is certainly one of the top half dozen or so wines of the vintage. The tannins are still there, but the wine seems far more accessible than the two bigger wines that Haut Brion produced in 1995 and 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2024. Last tasted, 11/02.

Wine Spectator 94/100

Has wonderful richness and suppleness, lovely fruit and harmony. A superb example of a graceful, balanced wine that is delicious now and can evolve over many years.--Haut-Brion vertical. 16,000 cases made. Published on April 30, 1997
