The Dalmore is a Scotch single malt distillery situated in Alness, in the Highlands, on the shores of the Cromarty Firth. Histoire du domaine
The Dalmore distillery was founded in 1839 in Alness, in the Scottish Highlands, by the entrepreneur Sir Alexander Matheson. During the first three decades, Matheson entrusted its operation to several tenants. In 1867, Andrew and Charles Mackenzie, descendants of the Mackenzie clan, took over the management of the distillery. They purchased the business outright in 1891 from Matheson’s son. Under their leadership, the twelve-pointed royal stag was adopted as The Dalmore’s emblem and the distillery expanded its exports, notably to Australia and New Zealand. Requisitioned by the Royal Navy during the First World War for the manufacture of mines, the distillery suffered an explosion and a fire in 1920, before distillation resumed in 1921. Hector ‘Hac’ Mackenzie succeeded his father William in 1946 and doubled the number of stills from four to eight. In 1960, Whyte & Mackay, then a major client of Dalmore, acquired the distillery. Richard Paterson joined the distillery in 1970 and became master distiller in 1975. Since 2021, Gregg Glass has been The Dalmore’s Master Whisky Maker, whilst Richard Paterson acts as mentor and master distiller.
