Château Les Carmes Haut Brion

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a Pessac-Léognan estate situated within the city of Bordeaux, centred around an enclosed vineyard through which the Peugue river flows. Its origins date back to a donation made by Jean de Pontac to the Carmelite Order in 1584. The estate is now owned by the Pichet family, and Guillaume Pouthier is responsible for its day-to-day management and winemaking.

Histoire du domaine

In 1584, Jean de Pontac, Lord of Haut-Brion, granted the monks of the Carmelite Order meadows and vineyards situated to the north of his estates. The Carmelites retained the estate for nearly two centuries. Confiscated during the French Revolution, the property was acquired by Léon Colin in 1840. His descendants, the Chantecaille family, subsequently developed the estate, adding a château and landscaped grounds. The estate was sold to Patrice Pichet in 2010 and is now owned by the Pichet family. Under their ownership, the historic vineyard in Bordeaux has undergone replanting, a review of the grape varieties in favour of Cabernet Franc, and upgrades to the winemaking facilities. A new winery, designed in collaboration with Philippe Starck and the architect Luc Arsène-Henry, was completed in time for the 2015 harvest and inaugurated in 2016. Guillaume Pouthier is currently the estate manager; Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team act as consultants.

Cuvée

Le C

Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion is a Pessac-Léognan red wine from the soils of Martillac. The estate distinguishes it from the grand vin through a more traditional blend, centered around Merlot complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon. Its expression favors fruit, a crisp density in its youth, and increased complexity with aging.

Origin of the cuvée name
The name is an abbreviation of the former designation 'Le Clos des Carmes Haut-Brion', replaced by 'Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion' starting from the 2013 vintage.
Cuvée creation year
2013
Style of the cuvée
A fruity and elegant wine, built on a dense and crisp structure in its youth, then gaining complexity with evolution.
Position within the range
Second wine and 'other signature' of the estate, positioned as a prelude to the grand vin Les Carmes Haut-Brion.

Histoire de la cuvée

The wine appears in official records under the name 'Le Clos des Carmes Haut-Brion' for the 2011 and 2012 vintages. As of the 2013 vintage, it was renamed 'Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion' and presented by the château as its other signature.
