Ichiro's Malt

Ichiro's Malt is the Japanese whisky brand created by Ichiro Akuto within Venture Whisky, in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture. Its portfolio includes blends, the last historic spirits from Hanyu, and single malts produced at Chichibu's two distilleries. Ichiro Akuto manages the direction as well as the distillation and blending work.

Histoire du domaine

Ichiro Akuto comes from the family that operated Toa Shuzo and the Hanyu distillery, built by his grandfather Isouji Akuto in 1941 and licensed to distill whisky in 1946. After Hanyu ceased operations and the family business was sold, the new owner did not wish to keep the approximately 400 casks still maturing. Akuto then sought a solution to preserve this stock, which was ultimately welcomed by Sasanokawa Shuzo. He founded Venture Whisky in 2004 to showcase these spirits and launched the first Ichiro's Malt in 2005. The Hanyu casks notably gave birth to the famous Card Series. Akuto then established the Chichibu distillery in 2007; the production license was obtained and distillation began in 2008. The first single malt from Chichibu, Ichiro's Malt Chichibu The First, was released in 2011. Venture Whisky subsequently developed its own cooperage in 2014, regularly engaged in floor malting starting in 2015, and commissioned a second distillery in Chichibu in 2019, equipped with a significantly higher production capacity than the first site. Ichiro Akuto remains president of Venture Whisky and serves as master blender and distiller.
