Domaine Gérard Mugneret Echezeaux 2012 Bottle (75cl)

The 2012 Domaine Gérard Mugneret Échezeaux is a red Burgundy wine from the Échezeaux Grand Cru in Vosne-Romanée. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, it received 92-94/100 from The Wine Advocate. Critics highlight a precise bouquet of ripe red fruit, combined with a mineral and licorice nuance, followed by a balanced palate with tannins that are both firm and supple. Its controlled acidity and tight finish give it excellent aging potential.

Histoire du domaine

The estate’s origins date back to Eugène Mugneret, who acquired the first plots whilst working as a timber merchant. His son René was the first in the family to devote himself professionally to viticulture and developed the estate’s client base. Gérard Mugneret, born in 1948, succeeded him after his brother Jean had chosen a career in the Air Force. He produced his first wines under his own name in 1973, whilst part of the production continued to bear the René Mugneret label until 1986. The winery equipment was modernised in the early 1990s, notably with the introduction of a pneumatic press. The vineyard then expanded through the acquisition of plots such as Les Gravains in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Les Charmes in Chambolle-Musigny. After a career in industry, Pascal Mugneret returned to the estate in 2004 and produced his first vintages there in 2005. Under his leadership, herbicides were phased out in 2005, synthetic products in 2010, and practices inspired by biodynamics were introduced from 2011 onwards. Pascal Mugneret is now at the helm of EARL Gérard Mugneret and oversees both vineyard management and winemaking.

Échezeaux (Vosne Romanée)

Échezeaux is a Grand Cru appellation physically delimited within the Côte de Nuits, located entirely within the commune of Flagey-Echézeaux, between Clos de Vougeot and the Premiers Crus of Vosne-Romanée. It brings together eleven climats and features more diverse topography and soils than the neighboring Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru. The vineyard ranges in altitude from 230 meters to just over 300 meters, with a slope reaching 13% mid-slope. Bajocian marls, locally covered with scree, gravel, red alluvium, and yellowish marls, form a complex mosaic.

Histoire de la parcelle

The winegrowing development of Échezeaux is associated with the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux in the 12th and 13th centuries, within the same historical complex as Clos de Vougeot. The Échezeaux Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée was recognized by the decree of July 31, 1937, published on August 11, 1937.

The 2012 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a very enticing bouquet: dense ripe redcurrant and raspberry fruit, cold limestone, a very faint touch of licorice in the background, all very well defined and intense. The palate is very well balanced with firm, supple tannins on the entry. The acidity here is nicely judged and the tension on the finish is excellent. This is a well-crafted Echezeaux that deserve long-term ageing. Approaching Domaine Gerard Mugneret, my car is suddenly surrounded by a swarm of merry elderly gentlemen wrapped up in scarves and overcoats. Not wishing to run anyone over, I just put the handbrake on and wait for the crowd to saunter up to the central square in Vosne-Romanee. When I met Pascal Mugneret I enquired their identity. He answered that his mother’s ecclesiastical connections had resulted in the priesthood requesting a winery visit, no doubt to make sure that their monastic ancestors knew what they were doing when establishing Burgundy’s most coveted vineyards. This was my second visit to the domaine in six months having tasted their 2011s back in June. The good news is that the 2012s, which were picked from 22 September, are even better and I think that is partly due to the decision to include 15% to 25% whole cluster fruit for the first time. It lends these wines more structure and freshness and Pascal remarked that he intends to repeat the practice again depending on the growing season. I was very impressed by these wines and when people ask me who the next star is in Vosne-Romanee, it is people like Pascal that come to mind. These wines were beautifully crafted, each expressive of their respective terroirs, full of tension and vigor, quite simply wines that probably satisfied this writer as much as the clergy.
