Domain Mugnier Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses 1989 Bottle (75cl)

The 1989 Domaine JF Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is a premier cru red Burgundy from the Les Amoureuses climat in Chambolle-Musigny. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, it comes from the estate's 52.85-are parcel, where the majority of the vines were planted in 1954 and 1956. The soil combines a layer of red clay over a compact limestone slab. This cuvée is characterized by the combination of deep texture, great length, and ethereal delicacy.

Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur maker in Dijon. By the early 20th century, it owned nearly twenty hectares in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges, following the acquisition of the Clos de la Maréchale in 1902. Until 1949, wine production was carried out alongside the family’s liqueur business. From 1878 onwards, the wines were marketed under the Château Chambolle-Musigny label. In 1950, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, the founder’s great-grandson, sold the liqueur business and leased the vineyard – by then reduced in size due to inheritance – to a wine merchant in Nuits-Saint-Georges. He resumed direct management of the Chambolle vineyards from 1978. Upon his death in 1985, his son Frédéric Mugnier took full responsibility for the family estate. In 2004, the reintegration of the Clos de la Maréchale, previously leased out, increased the estate’s size from 4 to 14 hectares. The estate is now owned by Jocelyne and Frédéric Mugnier.

Parcelle & terroir

Les Amoureuses

Les Amoureuses is a climat officially classified as a Premier Cru of the AOC Chambolle-Musigny, located immediately below the Musigny grand cru. Its morphology is heterogeneous: an upper southeastern-facing appendage precedes a main section curving from southeast to south, where the slope softens significantly towards the bottom. The shallow clay soil rests on a compact limestone substrate. The geology varies with altitude, with Calcaire de Comblanchien dominating in the upper two-thirds, while the lower third rests on Calcaire de Prémeaux and Marnes à Ostrea acuminata.

Histoire de la parcelle

Les Amoureuses was already listed among the "first cuvées" of Chambolle in Jules Lavalle's classification published in 1855, right after Musigny and Petits-Musigny classified as head of cuvée. The AOC Chambolle-Musigny was recognized by decree on September 11, 1936. The specific parcel area granting the right to the Premier Cru designation was approved by the INAO on June 1 and 2, 1988, and the official specifications explicitly cite Les Amoureuses among the classified climats.
