Domaine Jean Chartron

Based in Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Jean Chartron farms 14.5 hectares spread across the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, with a particularly significant heritage in white premier and grand crus. The fifth generation brings together Jean-Michel Chartron, in charge of winemaking, and his sister Anne-Laure, who focuses more specifically on the vineyards. The estate is notably associated with Clos des Chevaliers, Clos du Cailleret and Clos de la Pucelle.

Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1859 by Jean-Édouard Dupard, a master cooper and wine merchant. His daughter Eugénie Dupard married Jean-Edmond Chartron and brought the family vineyards as a dowry, giving rise to the alliance of the Dupard and Chartron families. As mayor of Puligny, Jean-Édouard Dupard had a resolution passed in 1873 requesting the addition of the name of the Montrachet cru to that of the commune, which became Puligny-Montrachet. Several generations of the family subsequently took part in municipal life: Jean-Édouard Dupard, Jean-Edmond, Jean-Georges and then Jean-René Chartron successively served as mayor. Jean-Michel Chartron took over the estate in 2004; his sister Anne-Laure joined him to look after the vineyards more specifically, starting in 2014 according to the Guide Hachette. Today they represent the fifth family generation and farm 14.5 hectares in Puligny-Montrachet and neighboring communes.

Parcelle & terroir

Chevalier-Montrachet

Chevalier-Montrachet is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically delimited terroir in Puligny-Montrachet, reserved for white wines. It occupies an east- and southeast-facing slope in the heart of the hillside, between 260 and 300 meters in altitude according to the official specifications. Its lean, stony, well-draining, and low-fertility soils rest primarily on highly fragmented Bathonian limestone known as "calcaire de Chassagne"; a marly layer at the summit locally supports slightly richer soils. Historical shaping of the site is evidenced by ancient stone clearance, murgers (stone heaps), and dry-stone retaining walls.

Histoire de la parcelle

The name Montrachet is documented as early as the 13th century in the form "Mont Rachaz"; the official heritage source interprets it as a "bald mount" (mont pelé), in reference to its stunted vegetation. In the 18th century, the wines of the Chevalier climat were still frequently assimilated with those of Montrachet, although Courtépée already distinguished true Montrachet, Chevalier, and Bâtard. A 1921 court ruling reserved the name Montrachet to Vrai Montrachet while acknowledging the customary use of Chevalier-Montrachet. The Chevalier-Montrachet AOC was recognized in 1937, and its vineyard area was subsequently adjusted in 1939 through the integration of plots from the neighboring lieu-dit Le Cailleret; the current delimitation was approved by the INAO in September 1989.
