Domaine Leroy

Domaine Leroy is a Burgundian wine estate based in Vosne-Romanée, with vineyards spread across several appellations in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It was founded in 1988 by Lalou Bize-Leroy, a descendant of the family that founded Maison Leroy. The estate cultivates nearly 22 hectares using biodynamic methods and produces, in particular, village wines, premiers crus and grands crus.

Histoire du domaine

The Leroy family’s history in the wine industry began in 1868, when François Leroy founded Maison Leroy in Auxey-Duresses, a wine merchant business distinct from the current Domaine Leroy. His son Joseph expanded the business, and his grandson Henri Leroy joined the company in 1919. In 1942, Henri Leroy acquired a stake of approximately half of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. His daughter, Lalou Bize-Leroy, joined the family business in 1955 and became its chairwoman in 1971. She was co-manager of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from 1974 to 1992. In the late 1980s, she acquired vineyards from the Charles Noëllat estate in Vosne-Romanée in 1988, followed by the Philippe-Rémy estate in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1989: these acquisitions form the Domaine Leroy as it stands today. The transition to biodynamic viticulture began during this period. Lalou Bize-Leroy remains the owner of the estate and is directly involved in the winemaking and ageing processes.

I found the 1992 Gevrey-Chambertin aux Combottes to be spicy and tannic, with fine richness, but some leanness and herbaceous toughness in the flavors and finish kept my score short of exceptional. It possesses fine depth as well as a meaty, smoky character, but the wine's vegetal aspect is off-putting. I have said it so many times that it may seem redundant, but if you missed it in my 1990 tome, Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy's quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yields and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration, she has been scorned by many Burgundy negociants, and even by the proprietors of other top domaines. Not only are they jealous, they are frightened of Bize-Leroy because they fear increasing pressure for lower yields and bio-dynamic farming. Anyone who loves great Burgundy, must realize that her wines embarrass much of what is produced in Burgundy. For the fifth consecutive vintage since she launched her wines from the Domaine Leroy (formerly the Noellat estate), Lalou Bize-Leroy has made the highest percentage of Burgundy's greatest wines. Although not as phenomenally concentrated and extracted as her 1991s and 1990s, the 1992s are more closely aligned to her sumptuous 1989s. All of Domaine Leroy's 1992 Burgundies are shipped in temperature-controlled reefer containers and are distributed carefully by the American importer, Martine's Wines, San Rafael, CA; tel.
