Histoire du domaine
The origins of Château Haut-Bergey date back to the 15th century, when land consolidations carried out by the lords of La Louvière and d’Olivier formed the fiefdom of Mayne de Ponteil, the original nucleus of the estate. Under the Ancien Régime, a noble house in Ponteil stood near the château’s current location. Over the centuries, the estate belonged, amongst others, to royal advisers and Bordeaux wine merchants, who continued to cultivate the vineyards there. The present manor house was built in the mid-19th century, a period during which the estate gradually evolved into a holiday retreat. Wine-growing was reintroduced there in 1957. The acquisition of part of the neighbouring Bergey estate subsequently enabled the estate to adopt the name Château Haut-Bergey. The Garcin family acquired the property in 1991; Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard then undertook the restoration of the vineyard and cellars, as well as phasing out the use of herbicides. Paul Garcin, who has been with the family business since 2007, has managed the estate since 2014 and oversaw the conversion to organic farming in 2015, followed by a switch to biodynamic farming across the entire vineyard from 2016 onwards. The estate obtained AB and Demeter certification in 2018, followed by Biodyvin certification in 2019. François Prouteau, who joined the château in 2012 after working at the family’s other estates, is the estate’s cellar master.
