Histoire du domaine

The earliest known written reference to a wine identified with the Haut-Brion terroir dates from 1521. In 1533, Jean de Pontac acquired the rights to the noble estate of Haut-Brion, having received part of the land through his marriage to Jeanne de Bellon in 1525. He began construction of the château in 1549 and gradually organised the wine-growing estate. His descendants subsequently built up the wine’s reputation, particularly on the English market in the 17th century. Arnaud III de Pontac expanded the vineyard and contributed to the rise of a style of wine then known as ‘New French Claret’. Following several changes of ownership in the 18th and 19th centuries, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand owned the estate from 1801 to 1804. In 1855, Château Haut-Brion was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé for its red wines, alongside Lafite, Latour and Margaux. The estate has carried out systematic bottling on the premises since 1923. The American banker Clarence Dillon acquired Château Haut-Brion on 13 May 1935 and, together with his nephew Seymour Weller, undertook a modernisation of the buildings and cellars. The Dillon family still owns the estate today through Domaine Clarence Dillon, which has been chaired and managed by Prince Robert of Luxembourg since 2008. Winemaking is currently overseen by the technical team led by Jean-Philippe Masclef, with Florence Forgas as cellar master.

The 2014 Haut Brion is a blend of 50% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 11 September and 10 October, cropped at 42.9 hectoliters per hectare and raised in 70% new oak. As I observed when I made the comparison in barrel, the Haut Brion exudes more red fruit than La Mission Haut Brion, adorned with wild strawberry, bilberry, tobacco and again, just that hint of menthol in the background. The palate is very fresh and taut on the entry. The acidity is very nicely pitched and there is a touch of marmalade and blood orange that is tangible at the back of the mouth. There is real frisson to this Haut Brion, not quite as seductive and as smooth as its sibling over the road, but very persistent in the mouth. I noticed that over 15 to 20 minutes that the Haut Brion just gained more and more complexity, putting a small distance between itself and La Mission, as if determined to mock my opinion in barrel that La Mission would have the upper hand! Be my guest. Haut Brion has an inch, just an inch ahead of its "rival" sibling.

Beautifully perfumed with rose petals, violets and currant bush. Full body, very silky tannins and bright acidity. Tannins are super fine-grained. Goes on for minutes. Racy and refined. Persistent. Drink in 2025.

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Plenty of black fruit, including a leafy note (Cab Franc?). Quite oaky on the palate and a little leaner than I expected from the nose but there’s real tannic refinement here and excellent balance.
