Histoire du domaine
In 1811, John Cumming and his wife Helen took on a lease for Cardhu Farm and began distilling clandestinely, a practice that was widespread in Speyside at the time. John Cumming obtained a distilling licence in 1824, a date regarded as the official founding of the Cardhu distillery. Helen Cumming played a central role in running the family business. Following the death of her husband Lewis in 1872, Elizabeth Cumming, John and Helen’s daughter-in-law, took over the management of the distillery. She had the distillery rebuilt on a new site in the mid-1880s. In 1893, Elizabeth Cumming sold the business to John Walker & Sons, on the condition that the family remain involved in the management of the distillery. Cardhu thus became the first distillery acquired by John Walker & Sons, and its malt came to play a significant role in Johnnie Walker blends. The distillery is now part of the Diageo group; Roselyn Burnett is listed as Distillery Manager in recent industry sources.
