Alphonse Mellot Cuvée Edmond 2016 Bottle (75cl)
Alphonse Mellot Cuvée Edmond 2016 is a white Sancerre wine from the Loire Valley, crafted by Domaine Alphonse Mellot from Sauvignon Blanc. This cuvée comes from a 6-hectare parcel of old vines in La Moussière, aged between 40 and 87 years, with a south-south-westerly exposure. The vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically. The grapes are harvested in small crates and whole-cluster pressed; fermentation takes place in barrels, followed by aging on fine lees for an average of 10 to 14 months. The estate describes an ample, structured white wine with notes of lemon, brioche, anise, licorice, and spices, lingering into a mineral finish.

Histoire du domaine
Local archives mention the Mellot family as early as 1513 among the winemakers and wine merchants of Sancerre. In 1698, under Louis XIV, César Mellot was appointed wine advisor to the King. In the early 19th century, Alphonse Mellot opened an inn in Sancerre where he promoted local wines; in 1881, a license allowed the firm to ship its wines across France and abroad. Since that time, the eldest son of each generation has been named Alphonse. In 1983, Alphonse Mellot senior significantly reduced the négociant activity to refocus the family business on its own terroirs. A graduate in oenology, Alphonse Mellot Junior joined the estate in 1991, gradually taking over technical management and vinification responsibilities. He developed single-plot vinification, particularly around La Moussière, and transitioned the vineyard to organic and then biodynamic viticulture. The Sancerre estate thus reached 58 hectares, complemented separately by Domaine des Pénitents, located near La Charité-sur-Loire.
Cuvée Edmond
Edmond is a white Sancerre made from Sauvignon Blanc from the old vines of La Moussière. The estate distinguishes it explicitly from the classic La Moussière and ages it on fine lees in oak barrels. It aims for greater richness, density, and aging potential.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The cuvée bears the first name of Alphonse Mellot's father, Edmond, to whom it pays tribute.
- Style of the cuvée
- Ample, rich, and structured white Sancerre, combining fruit maturity, freshness, strong mineral expression, and pronounced oak aging, with a long spicy finish and evolution potential.
- Position within the range
- Selection of old vines from La Moussière, richer and more ambitious than the estate's classic white Sancerre.
Histoire de la cuvée
Alphonse Mellot explains that he created this cuvée as a tribute to his father Edmond and to the family's transmission of expertise. The wine is crafted from a selection of old vines from the Domaine de La Moussière.
