Domain Nicolas Rossignol Pommard Epenots 2018 Bottle (75cl)
The 2018 Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Pommard Épenots is a red Burgundy wine classified as 1er Cru, crafted in Pommard from Pinot Noir. The cuvée comes from two plots located in Les Petits Épenots, on the Beaune side, and at the top of the slope above Clos des Épeneaux. The estate cultivates vines here that are approximately 50 years old alongside others over a centenarian, on light, highly draining soils rich in rolled stones. The proclaimed profile combines rich, powerful substance with intense black fruits and ripe, silky tannins.

Histoire du domaine
Born in 1974, Nicolas Rossignol represents the fifth generation of a winemaking family established in Volnay. Trained at the Beaune viticultural high school, he completed his apprenticeship with experiences at Domaine Joseph Voillot in Volnay, Louis Latour in Ardèche, and Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, before vinifying in 1995 at Boschendal in South Africa and working at Château La Cardonne, a property then associated with Château Lafite Rothschild. He vinified at the family estate Rossignol-Jeanniard starting in 1994 before creating his own estate in 1997, initially comprising 3 hectares spread across Volnay, Pommard, Beaune, Aloxe-Corton, and Pernand-Vergelesses. By 1998, the combined operations with Rossignol-Jeanniard covered nearly 16 hectares. In 2005, new parcels from Domaine Robert Ampeau further enriched the range, notably in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune. The two structures merged in 2011 under the single label Domaine Nicolas Rossignol, then representing nearly thirty appellations, and the operation was transferred to Beaune. In 2014, an additional 1.5 hectares in Pommard and Pommard Premier Cru joined the estate, whose announced surface area today reaches 17 hectares.
Épenots
Épenots designates a winegrowing sector in the northeast of Pommard, towards the border with Beaune, rather than a single official climat. The specifications distinguish within this sector the Premier Cru climats Les Grands Epenots, Les Petits Epenots and Clos des Epeneaux, the latter covering parts of neighboring cadastral lieux-dits. The soils present a mosaic of Jurassic limestones and, in part of Les Petits Epenots, alluvial cone deposits, making it impossible to assign them a perfectly uniform pedological profile.
- Vineyard commune
- Pommard
- Origin of the vineyard name
- The name Épenots is thought to be derived from the thorny bushes that once covered this sector of the Pommard hillside.
- Subsoil and geology
- Mosaic of Middle Jurassic limestones: Ladoix limestones in the upper parts of both Epenots, Chassagne limestones notably towards Les Petits Epenots; nearly half of Les Petits Epenots is covered by the Quaternary alluvial fan of the Combe Lulunne.
Le domaine dans cette parcelle
- Indicative vine age
- Two parcels make up the Épenots cuvée of the estate: one around 50 years old, the other over a century old.
Histoire de la parcelle
A producer source reports that in 1620 Guillaume d'Argilly acquired and cleared land in Les Épenots before giving it to the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux, likely linked to the Domaine de Maizières, without certain identification of the plot concerned. On a modern regulatory level, the INAO separately recognizes Les Grands Epenots, Clos des Epeneaux and Les Petits Epenots among the Pommard climats classified as Premier Cru.
