The 2019 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is a white Burgundy wine from the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru in Puligny-Montrachet. Crafted exclusively from Chardonnay, it combines concentration and precision. The Wine Advocate awards it 95/100 and describes a profile of peach, pear, hazelnut, and dried white flowers, supported by lively acidity, a satin-like texture, and a chalky-accented finish. The publication recommends drinking it between 2025 and 2050.

Histoire du domaine

The Leflaive family has been based in Puligny-Montrachet since 1717 and at that time owned a few vineyards, the grapes from which were sold. The estate in its modern form was established by Joseph Leflaive (1870–1953), an engineer by training, who returned to manage the family estate following the phylloxera crisis. From 1920 onwards, he embarked on a programme of replanting, acquiring and developing the vineyards, with the support of his estate manager, François Virot. He gradually began marketing the wines under his own label, whilst the first bottles were exported to the United States between 1932 and 1939. Following his death in 1953, his children Jo, Jeanne, Anne and Vincent kept the estate together and established a civil partnership in 1973. Jo took charge of administration and finances, whilst Vincent oversaw the vineyard, the wines and their marketing. Olivier Leflaive became co-manager alongside Vincent in 1986, then Anne-Claude Leflaive joined the management team in 1990 before being appointed manager in 1994. Under her leadership, the estate gradually adopted biodynamic farming during the 1990s. Following her death in April 2015, her nephew Brice de La Morandière, the great-grandson of Joseph Leflaive, became managing partner. Since January 2025, Amandine Brillanceau has held the post of technical director; Louis Brière is cellar master at Puligny-Montrachet.

Parcelle & terroir

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is a physically delimited climat of Puligny-Montrachet, also constituting a Grand Cru Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée reserved for white wines. It occupies the lower part of the slope, with an east and south-east exposure, at an altitude of approximately 250 meters. Clayey colluvium, relatively poor in limestone pebbles, covers a Callovian subsoil of slab limestones, which favors drainage.

Histoire de la parcelle

In the 18th century, the wines from the "Bienvenues" climat still appear to have been grouped with those of Montrachet or Bâtard. A court ruling in 1921 established the hierarchy of the grand crus of Puligny-Montrachet, and then the plot area of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet was individualized and recognized under the "grand cru" designation in 1939.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of peach, pear, hazelnuts and dried white flowers, framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction, the 2019 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, its concentrated core of fruit framed by racy acids and chalky extract. Like the Pucelles, this is precise and fine boned, but it's also more muscular and intense.
