Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins back to 1754, when Jacques Boyd, from a family of wine merchants based in Belfast, acquired vineyards in Cantenac. The wine was then named after him and, as early as 1776, ranked third among the Cantenac wines in the classification drawn up by the wine merchant Labadie. The Boyd family experienced financial difficulties prior to the French Revolution. In 1806, John Lewis Brown, a relative by marriage of the Boyds, took over the estate. In 1843, the sale to Gromard and Jean Verrière marked the beginning of the historic split between what would become the Cantenac-Brown and Boyd-Cantenac estates. Under the name Château Boyd, the estate was classified as a third grand cru in the 1855 classification. The wine crises of the second half of the 19th century led to the estate’s decline, but it was rebuilt at the start of the 20th century by the Laurent and Ginestet families. The Guillemet family acquired Boyd-Cantenac in 1932, whilst they already owned Château Pouget. Lucien Guillemet, an oenologist and agricultural engineer, has been managing the estate since 1996; his nephew Olivier Salques is now involved in its management.
