Jamet Cote Rotie La Landonne 2019 Bottle (75cl)

The 2019 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie La Landonne is a red wine from the Rhône Valley made from 100% Syrah. This Côte-Rôtie cuvée displays a dense and profound structure, underpinned by fine yet commanding tannins. Jancis Robinson awards it 18/20 and advises drinking it between 2025 and 2040, while James Suckling gives it 97/100, with an ideal drinking window starting from 2026. Critics note aromas and flavors of black fruits, smoke, spices, black olive, bitter chocolate, and herbs, lingering through a very long finish.

Histoire du domaine

Domaine Jamet is part of the Jamet family’s wine-growing history in Ampuis, where the estate once combined vineyards and fruit orchards. Jean-Paul Jamet founded the estate at the hamlet of Le Vallin in 1975. The first harvest was bottled at the estate in 1976, following a period during which the produce was sold to wine merchants. Jean-Paul initially worked alongside his father Joseph, and later with his brother Jean-Luc. Over the years, the family built up a portfolio of plots on the slopes of Côte-Rôtie and expanded their range to include wines from Condrieu and the Côtes-du-Rhône. In 2013, the two brothers went their separate ways and Jean-Luc set up his own estate. Domaine Jamet has since remained under the management of Jean-Paul and his wife Corinne. Loïc Jamet has gradually become involved in the work in the cellar and the vineyard; in particular, he has been producing the Condrieu Vernillon since 2015 with his father’s support. Fanny and Loïc now carry on the family business alongside their parents.

Still very youthful, this has a deep nose of smoke, bitter chocolate and herbal liqueur. The gigantic tannin structure on the palate will need many years of further aging to completely resolve, but the tannins are fine which gives the super-long finish an extraordinary texture, like old-fashioned velvet. So much smoke and crushed rock character! A pure syrah which is then fermented with 100% whole bunches. Matured in 100% new oak for 42 months. Drinkable now, but best from 2026, and even then you should decant it.

Deep ruby purple colour. Very youthful and a little stubborn to reveal itself on the nose at the moment. Ripe blueberries and forest fruit come together with a little spice and black olive. The palate shows the same dense youthfulness. This is ripe and deep but hard to unravel at this moment. Darker, fuller and more fruit-driven in profile with a dense, bold structure, it is hard to read but shows good potential. I would be interested to try this at a decade old, if I am ever given the chance to try it again!
