Histoire du domaine

Domaine Jamet is part of the Jamet family’s wine-growing history in Ampuis, where the estate once combined vineyards and fruit orchards. Jean-Paul Jamet founded the estate at the hamlet of Le Vallin in 1975. The first harvest was bottled at the estate in 1976, following a period during which the produce was sold to wine merchants. Jean-Paul initially worked alongside his father Joseph, and later with his brother Jean-Luc. Over the years, the family built up a portfolio of plots on the slopes of Côte-Rôtie and expanded their range to include wines from Condrieu and the Côtes-du-Rhône. In 2013, the two brothers went their separate ways and Jean-Luc set up his own estate. Domaine Jamet has since remained under the management of Jean-Paul and his wife Corinne. Loïc Jamet has gradually become involved in the work in the cellar and the vineyard; in particular, he has been producing the Condrieu Vernillon since 2015 with his father’s support. Fanny and Loïc now carry on the family business alongside their parents.

As with most producers’ 2007 Cote Rotie, this cuvee is difficult to judge. It was a challenging year with abundant hail damage, and horrible weather in August, but September turned things around for the better producers. This offering, which was aged in a combination of small barrels and demi-muids, exhibits a dark ruby/purple-tinged color, aromas of ground pepper and green vegetables, decent, medium-bodied, concentrated flavors, but little ripeness or depth. (Not yet released) It seems to me that Jamet’s traditional Cote Roties, which I adored in vintages such as 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1999, have not been up to snuff over recent years. It is difficult to understand why as this has always been one of the more reliable producers in Cote Rotie. They do have a mind-bending 25 separate parcels (18 acres) spread over Cote Rotie, with some terrific sites, but the wines have become increasingly lean and sinewy as well as herbaceous and vegetal.
