Histoire du domaine

Domaine Jamet is part of the Jamet family’s wine-growing history in Ampuis, where the estate once combined vineyards and fruit orchards. Jean-Paul Jamet founded the estate at the hamlet of Le Vallin in 1975. The first harvest was bottled at the estate in 1976, following a period during which the produce was sold to wine merchants. Jean-Paul initially worked alongside his father Joseph, and later with his brother Jean-Luc. Over the years, the family built up a portfolio of plots on the slopes of Côte-Rôtie and expanded their range to include wines from Condrieu and the Côtes-du-Rhône. In 2013, the two brothers went their separate ways and Jean-Luc set up his own estate. Domaine Jamet has since remained under the management of Jean-Paul and his wife Corinne. Loïc Jamet has gradually become involved in the work in the cellar and the vineyard; in particular, he has been producing the Condrieu Vernillon since 2015 with his father’s support. Fanny and Loïc now carry on the family business alongside their parents.

I have up-graded my opinion of this 1991 Cote Rotie Cote Brune after having had it several times on this side of the Atlantic. It is exhibiting even greater richness and intensity than I indicated when I gave it a whoppingly high score of 92 and profiled it in issue #90 (closing date 12-20-93). Aged in one-third new oak with one-third of the blend coming from Jamet's holdings in the La Landonne vineyard on the Cote Brune, the wine offers a huge, intense, spicy nose of smoked meats, black-raspberries, herbs, and new saddle leather. Masculine, rich, and chewy, with massive flavor extraction and spicy new oak in evidence, as well as a phenomenal finish, this Cote Rotie needs another 3-4 years of cellaring; it should keep for 15-20 years. Very impressive!
