Histoire du domaine
The Paul Jaboulet Aîné estate was founded in 1834 in Tain-l’Hermitage by Antoine Jaboulet, born in 1807. It subsequently expanded under the management of his sons, Paul and Henry, and then their descendants. In 1919, the family acquired the Saint-Christophe Chapel, situated at the summit of the Hermitage hill. Louis Jaboulet took over the family business in 1940 and ran it for several decades. The estate created ‘Parallèle 45’, a Côtes-du-Rhône cuvée, in 1950. Gérard Jaboulet took over in 1977 and expanded the estate’s international reach until his death in 1997. The Frey family took over Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 2006, whilst Caroline Frey took charge of the business and began converting the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming. A new gravity-fed cellar was built in 2010. The vineyards were certified organic in 2016. In 2023, the Domaine de la Chapelle was established to bring together the La Chapelle and Le Chevalier de Stérimberg cuvées. Caroline Frey stepped down from the management of the family estates in July 2025; no sufficiently reliable source has made it possible to identify by name the person currently directly responsible for winemaking at Paul Jaboulet Aîné.
La Chapelle
La Chapelle is an Hermitage cuvée historically associated with Paul Jaboulet Aîné and today produced by Domaine de La Chapelle. The red, crafted from Syrah, blends several great terroirs from the western part of the hill, notably Bessards, Varogne, Méal, and Rocoules. White wines were also historically marketed under the name La Chapelle Blanc, but the estate's white is now identified as Le Chevalier de Sterimberg.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name refers to the Saint-Christophe chapel located at the top of the Hermitage hill, acquired by the Jaboulet family in 1919.
- Cuvée creation year

Histoire de la cuvée
The Jaboulet family acquired the Saint-Christophe chapel in 1919 and released the first documented La Chapelle cuvée two years later. The wine gained international renown, particularly with the 1961 red vintage. In 2023, the Frey family created Domaine de La Chapelle, bringing together La Chapelle and Le Chevalier de Sterimberg.
