Hundred Acre
Hundred Acre is a Napa Valley producer founded by Jayson Woodbridge, dedicated primarily to single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from three estate-owned vineyards: Morgan’s Way, Ark, and Few and Far Between. Jayson Woodbridge oversees the winemaking himself, carried out since 2005 in the underground Ring cellar built beneath Ark Vineyard. Histoire du domaine
A former investment banker, Jayson Woodbridge began visiting vineyards in Canada, Switzerland, and France as early as 1989, before settling in the Napa Valley in the late 1990s. The development of Ark Vineyard began following its acquisition in 1999. In August 2000, he purchased Kayli Morgan Vineyard, now renamed Morgan’s Way; Philippe Melka vinified the first Hundred Acre, the 2000 Kayli Morgan Cabernet Sauvignon, at Rombauer's facilities, before production moved to Quintessa in 2001. Woodbridge took over direct winemaking responsibilities in 2002, with Melka remaining as a consultant until 2013. The first wine from Ark Vineyard was produced in 2005, the year from which the wines have been crafted in the underground Ring cellar located beneath the vineyard. In 2008, Woodbridge acquired a 46.5-hectare property in Calistoga featuring Pickett Road Vineyard, renamed Few and Far Between; the first cuvée bearing this name came from the 2008 vintage. The initial investors and partners have since been bought out, and Jayson Woodbridge along with his wife Helen Mawson Woodbridge have become the sole owners of Hundred Acre.
Ark Vineyard
Ark Vineyard is a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the eponymous Hundred Acre vineyard, located on the volcanic slopes at the foot of Glass Mountain, near St. Helena. The site's various exposures, plots, clonal selections, and geological layers are vinified separately before final blending. It represents one of the estate's premier vineyard expressions.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name refers to the almost perfect arc shape of the vineyard and also plays on "Ark", the biblical ark, as one of Jayson Woodbridge's sons is named Noah.
- Cuvée creation year
- 2005
- Style of the cuvée
- A powerful, rich, and concentrated Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, marked by its volcanic origin, yet striving for purity of fruit, balance, texture, and aging potential.
- Position within the range
- One of Hundred Acre's three iconic single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons.
Histoire de la cuvée
The development of Ark Vineyard began after the acquisition of the site in 1999. The vines, planted on south-facing slopes, trace an arc of approximately 180 degrees. The first Ark wine was produced with the 2005 vintage, the year from which Hundred Acre also established its underground cellar, The Ring, beneath this vineyard.
