Histoire du domaine

Étienne Guigal founded Maison Guigal in Ampuis in 1946, having worked at Vidal-Fleury from 1924 onwards and played a part in the development of this Rhône-based estate. He produced wine from 67 vintages in Côte-Rôtie during his career. In 1961, his son Marcel Guigal took over the management of the business alongside his father, who had lost his sight. Bernadette Guigal joined the family business in 1973. The company acquired the Vidal-Fleury estates in the early 1980s, whilst maintaining their identity and commercial autonomy. In 1995, the family acquired Château d’Ampuis, on the banks of the Rhône. Philippe Guigal, who trained in oenology, officially joined the company in 1997 after having been involved in the technical aspects for several years. In 2001, the acquisition of the Jean-Louis Grippat and Vallouit estates expanded the family’s vineyards in the Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage appellations. The company established its own cooperage at Château d’Ampuis in 2003. Philippe Guigal is now managing director and head of winemaking, alongside Marcel Guigal, chairman of the family business.

Cuvée

La Mouline

La Mouline is a red Côte-Rôtie from a single-vineyard plot located in the heart of the Côte Blonde and laid out in amphitheatre-style terraces. It traditionally combines co-planted Syrah and Viognier. The estate distinguishes it by its limited production, silky texture, and intensely aromatic expression.

Cuvée creation year
1966
Style of the cuvée
A concentrated yet exceptionally fine and voluptuous Côte-Rôtie with a silky texture and an intense aromatic profile dominated by red fruits, flowers, and notably violet.
Position within the range
Iconic single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie cru, classified among "Les Trésors", at the very top of the Guigal range.

Histoire de la cuvée

The plot was acquired in 1963 from the Dervieux family. La Mouline was Guigal's first single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie, with the first vintage produced in 1966, and became one of the estate's iconic crus.

The great glories of this house are its Cote Roties, of which there are now five separate offerings. The 1993s, which have just come on the marketplace, are from a troublesome vintage for everyone in Cote Rotie, rivaling 1984 in difficulty. Nevertheless, the single-vineyard wines have turned out well. As for the single vineyard wines, they are all excellent in 1993, but more herbaceous and clearly marked by the green pepper smells of slightly underripe Syrah. The 1993 Cote Rotie La Mouline exhibits a deep ruby color, light to medium body, soft, elegant aromas of toasty new oak, and a short finish with some unmistakable herbaceousness. The La Mouline character does come through in this supple wine, which is best drunk over the next 7-8 years. It is surprisingly better out of bottle than it was in cask. Guigal is one of the cellars where the wines always taste better after they are bottled than they do from cask, although as the scores in this segment indicate, some profound wines can be found in the 1994, 1995, and 1996 vintages Chez Guigal.
