Histoire du domaine

Étienne Guigal founded Maison Guigal in Ampuis in 1946, having worked at Vidal-Fleury from 1924 onwards and played a part in the development of this Rhône-based estate. He produced wine from 67 vintages in Côte-Rôtie during his career. In 1961, his son Marcel Guigal took over the management of the business alongside his father, who had lost his sight. Bernadette Guigal joined the family business in 1973. The company acquired the Vidal-Fleury estates in the early 1980s, whilst maintaining their identity and commercial autonomy. In 1995, the family acquired Château d’Ampuis, on the banks of the Rhône. Philippe Guigal, who trained in oenology, officially joined the company in 1997 after having been involved in the technical aspects for several years. In 2001, the acquisition of the Jean-Louis Grippat and Vallouit estates expanded the family’s vineyards in the Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage appellations. The company established its own cooperage at Château d’Ampuis in 2003. Philippe Guigal is now managing director and head of winemaking, alongside Marcel Guigal, chairman of the family business.

The 1991 La Landonne will provide multimillionaires with plenty of pleasure over the next 20 years. They can also debate whether it or the perfect 1990 is the better wine. The 1991's bouquet offers huge, smoky, new saddle leather, licorice, Asian spice, meaty, and cassis scents. Black in color, with layers of richness, huge body, massive extraction, and a phenomenal finish, it is another legend from Marcel Guigal. It will be the least precocious of the 1991s, needing until the turn of the century to open and develop; it should keep for 25-30 + years. Last tasted 6/96.

Very deep – the youngest looking, deepest and bluest of the three Guigal 1991s. Some oak still there. Still very, very dense and tough and oaky. The least evolved, but very good.
