Histoire du domaine
Étienne Guigal founded Maison Guigal in Ampuis in 1946, having worked at Vidal-Fleury from 1924 onwards and played a part in the development of this Rhône-based estate. He produced wine from 67 vintages in Côte-Rôtie during his career. In 1961, his son Marcel Guigal took over the management of the business alongside his father, who had lost his sight. Bernadette Guigal joined the family business in 1973. The company acquired the Vidal-Fleury estates in the early 1980s, whilst maintaining their identity and commercial autonomy. In 1995, the family acquired Château d’Ampuis, on the banks of the Rhône. Philippe Guigal, who trained in oenology, officially joined the company in 1997 after having been involved in the technical aspects for several years. In 2001, the acquisition of the Jean-Louis Grippat and Vallouit estates expanded the family’s vineyards in the Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage appellations. The company established its own cooperage at Château d’Ampuis in 2003. Philippe Guigal is now managing director and head of winemaking, alongside Marcel Guigal, chairman of the family business.
Brune et Blonde
Red Côte-Rôtie originating from a selection and blend of parcels located on the Côtes Brune and Blonde. It primarily combines Syrah with a small proportion of Viognier and benefits from prolonged aging in barrels. Guigal presents it as a classic of the estate and an archetype of the appellation's fine and refined expression.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name refers to the two historical sectors of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, from which the blended grapes originate.
- Style of the cuvée
- Fine and refined Côte-Rôtie, combining red and black fruits, spices, and delicate woody notes, with round, integrated tannins and a structure suited for aging.
- Position within the range
- A Côte-Rôtie classic included in 'La Collection', positioned below the single-vineyard and prestige cuvées of the 'Les Trésors' range.
Histoire de la cuvée
This historical cuvée of the estate brings together the two major sets of terroirs of Côte-Rôtie: Côte Blonde, with schistous and siliceous-limestone soils, and Côte Brune, rich in iron oxide. The date of its first release is not documented with sufficient reliability in the consulted sources.
