Domaine Thierry Allemand

Established in Cornas by Thierry Allemand in the early 1980s, this estate of approximately five hectares is the result of patient restoration work on abandoned plots on the granitic slopes of the appellation. Its vineyard mainly supplies the Chaillot and Reynard cuvees, two expressions of Syrah vinified separately according to their origin. Théo Allemand, Thierry's son, has now taken over the reins at the estate.

Histoire du domaine

Thierry Allemand does not come from a family of winemakers and built his estate without a winegrowing heritage. In 1981, he began working with Robert Michel in Cornas, where he learned terrace viticulture, pruning, grafting, and vinification. As early as 1982, the year of his first vintage, he acquired a plot in La Côte, partly abandoned and in need of replanting. For some fifteen years, he maintained his job as an electrician while clearing hillsides, restoring dry-stone walls, and progressively buying or renting small plots. He also worked with Noël Verset, who sold him old vines located in Reynard at the end of the 1980s; Louis Verset also sold him old vines in this same lieu-dit. The estate, now close to five hectares, was thus built around plots in Chaillot and Reynard. Thierry Allemand developed a low-intervention vinification style, using whole clusters, no new oak, prolonged aging without racking, and limited use of sulfur; a cuvée without added sulfur was produced for the first time in 1998. His son Théo has since taken over at the estate, continuing the work initiated by his father.

Cuvée

Reynard

Reynard is one of Thierry Allemand's two main Cornas cuvées. It blends the estate's old vines, spread across several parcels, and is therefore not a single-vineyard wine. Some of the historic vines originate from Noël Verset.

Origin of the cuvée name
The name echoes the famous lieu-dit Reynard in Cornas, although the cuvée is not exclusively produced from this single lieu-dit.
Cuvée creation year
1991
Style of the cuvée
A cellar-worthy Cornas, deep and structured, combining concentration, finesse, and the mineral expression of Syrah. It is generally more austere in its youth and intended for a longer evolution than Chaillots.
Position within the range
A cuvée of old vines meant for long aging, generally positioned above Chaillots in the range.

Histoire de la cuvée

The first documented bottling under the name Reynard dates back to the 1991 vintage. The formation of its old-vine heritage is notably linked to the acquisition, in the 1980s, of Reynard vines belonging to Noël Verset.

100% Syrah, the Reynard, confusingly, comes from the Chaillot parcel but is from vines over 40 years old (younger-vine fruit goes into the Chaillot cuvée). Cask samples tasted at the domaine. Sample 1 Stunning dense purple core. Intense reductive wild and smoky nose with roasted game. Such intensity on the palate with bacon, violets and saline mineral notes. Very firm tannins, very tight structure and stunning purity. Sample 2 Vivid, vibrant, pure nose with blackcurrant and graphite mineral notes. Ripe and sweet fruit with finely polished tannins that support the vibrant acidity that runs throughout the spine of this wine. There's a suggestion of peppery, clove and eucalypt spice underneath just waiting to emerge with time. Impressive.
