Histoire du domaine
The winemaking origins of Ferme de la Sansonnière date back to the 15th century, when its vines belonged to the local lord Jean de Villeneuve and were cultivated by sharecroppers. In the 19th century, the property passed to the de Russon family, based at Château de Bonnezeaux. Farmed under a sharecropping agreement since 1958, the parcel was acquired by the Cesbron family in the late 1970s. A former mason trained in viticulture at Château La Tour Blanche in Sauternes under Jean-Luc Dantou, Mark Angeli bought the farm in 1989 and applied biodynamics from his very first vintage in 1990. Despite the initial reception given to these then-marginal practices in Anjou, he benefited from the support of the Foucault brothers of Clos Rougeard; a feature by La Revue du vin de France in 1991 subsequently helped make his wines known. After producing renowned sweet Bonnezeaux, Mark Angeli gradually steered the estate toward dry or off-dry Chenin Blancs, including from parcels historically falling under Bonnezeaux, and also developed Grolleau. His son Martial now works alongside him and has participated in vinification since 2021, ensuring the estate's continuity.
Les Gélinettes
Les Gélinettes is a single-plot red cuvée from Ferme de la Sansonnière, now marketed as a Vin de France. Historically made from Cabernet, it is now primarily based on Grolleau Noir. Gentle extraction aims to preserve fragrance, balance, and a supple texture.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name comes from the Gélinette plot; "gélinette" is also an old French term for the hazel grouse, a bird formerly found in Anjou.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1996
- Style of the cuvée
- Dry red wine favoring delicate extraction, with a generally fragrant, spicy, and fruity profile, a supple texture, and fresh energy rather than heavy tannic power.
- Position within the range
- Single-plot red cuvée produced in small quantities within a range primarily renowned for its Chenins.
Histoire de la cuvée
A bottling of Les Gélinettes is documented as early as the 1996 vintage. The cuvée subsequently bore the designation "Les Jeunes Vignes des Gélinettes". As the Cabernets from the plot were deemed unsatisfactory, the vines were top-grafted or replaced with Grolleau Noir; as they aged, the "Jeunes Vignes" designation was dropped.
