Domain Henri Richard Charmes Chambertin 1961 -5cm FD
The Domaine Henri Richard Charmes-Chambertin 1961 is a Burgundian red wine from the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru in the Gevrey-Chambertin area. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, it comes from a climat situated along the Route des Grands Crus, between Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate links this cuvée to 30- to 60-year-old vines planted on clay-limestone soils mixed with pebbles and gravel. The cuvée is documented today as vinified with whole clusters and aged for twelve months in oak barrels.

Histoire du domaine
The history of the estate begins in 1938, when Jean Richard, a former cooper, purchased a first plot of Mazoyères-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin from the Burgundian writer and historian Gaston Roupnel. He then acquired a house in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin as well as two hectares located behind it, in the lieu-dit "Aux Corvées". His son Henri Richard, who initially intended to pursue teaching, joined forces with him after earning his oenology diploma in 1939. With his wife Nadia and their daughters Margaret and Magali, Henri built the property's reputation and was among the first winemakers in Gevrey-Chambertin to bottle and commercialize their own wines. Before his death in 1985, he passed on his knowledge to his eldest daughter Margaret Bastien and her husband Jean Bastien, who joined the estate in 1977. Patrick Maroiller joined the operation from 1992 to 2012 and supported its shift toward organic viticulture: conversion began in 2001 and the first certified organic wines were released in 2005. In 2013, the fourth generation, Sarah Bastien-Berthier and Richard Bastien, children of Margaret and Jean, took over the estate. They were joined the same year by Guillaume Berthier, agricultural engineer and oenologist, under whose impetus the property obtained Demeter biodynamic certification in 2018. Published legal documents indicate that Sarah and Richard Bastien are currently co-managers of SCE Domaine Henri Richard.
Charmes-Chambertin (Gevrey Chambertin)
Charmes-Chambertin is a red Grand Cru appellation and a physically demarcated terroir within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, comprising the lieux-dits Aux Charmes and Mazoyères. The vineyard occupies a slight piedmont bench, between 260 and 280 meters in altitude, at the mouth of the Combe Grisard. Its shallow, carbonated and well-draining soils combine limestone gravel, clays and red silts; the parcels of Aux Charmes face mostly east to east-northeast, while Mazoyères is oriented more towards the south. The demarcated area of Mazoyères-Chambertin coincides with that of Charmes-Chambertin, the latter name being commonly claimed.

Histoire de la parcelle
The reputation of the climats Aux Charmes and Mazoyères is attested as early as the 18th century. In 1855, Jules Lavalle classified them partly as first cuvée and partly as second cuvée. A 1931 ruling by the Dijon court sanctioned the addition of the name Chambertin and established the boundaries of the appellation d'origine; the AOC Charmes-Chambertin was subsequently recognized by decree on July 31, 1937. The parcel area currently specified in the product specification cahier des charges was approved by the INAO on May 17 and 18, 1984.
