Domaine Hubert De Montille

Domaine de Montille is a family-run estate based in Volnay, in the Côte-d’Or, whose vineyards now extend across the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. Owned and managed by Étienne de Montille, it cultivates 37 hectares, predominantly in Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards, across appellations such as Volnay, Pommard, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Vosne-Romanée. The estate, historically associated with Volnay red wines, has also been producing white wines since the incorporation of the Château de Puligny-Montrachet vineyard.

Histoire du domaine

The estate’s origins date back to the 1730s, when the Chauvelot de Chevannes family, who owned vineyards, settled in Volnay. The estate took the name Domaine de Montille in 1863, following the marriage of Marie Éléonore Chauvelot de Chevannes to Étienne Joseph Marie Léonce Bizouard de Montille. In the 19th century, the estate comprised around 30 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. However, the consequences of the phylloxera crisis and a series of sales reduced the estate’s holdings to around 2.5 hectares by the end of the Second World War. Hubert de Montille took over the estate in 1947 and set about gradually rebuilding the family vineyard, whilst producing and marketing his wines himself rather than selling the grapes to wine merchants. His son Étienne joined the estate in 1983, before becoming co-manager and head of winemaking in 1995, the year in which the transition to organic farming began. He took full charge of the estate in 2002 and subsequently expanded the vineyard, notably through the acquisition of plots in the Côte de Nuits between 2003 and 2005. In 2012, the estate acquired the Château de Puligny-Montrachet, adding around 15 hectares of white grape vineyards to its holdings. The vineyard now covers 37 hectares, and winemaking is overseen in the cellar by Brian Sieve, the cellar master, with Jacques Montagnon responsible for the white wine production processes.

Histoire de la parcelle

Early 16th-century writings mention this site among the possessions of the Confrérie du Saint-Sacrement, presented as the heir to the Templars' property. The climat was ranked as a "tête de cuvée" in Dr. Lavalle's classification published in 1855. Today it falls under the AOC Volnay, recognized in 1937, with the right to the Premier Cru designation.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans includes two-thirds whole cluster fruit and around 30% new oak. Around one-quarter of the vines suffered frost damage here. It has a more charming bouquet than the Champans, the whole bunch neatly disguised and lending discrete definition and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin and well-judged acidity. It's quite structured like the Les Champans; however, I discerned more grace and finesse here.

Silt with limestone on clay (whereas Grevès is more classic clay on calcaire). Misplanted 45 years ago with rootstock that was going to give a lot of fruit and resist disease. Produced a lot of fruit in early days but now it has 45-year-old vines behaving like 70-year-old vines. 20 hl/ha because of the rootstock. It is financially unsustainable but he is insisting on not ripping it out. Two-thirds whole bunch and one-third new oak. Barrel sample. Deep cherry red. Riper and richer cherry fruit in the aroma than the Grèves. But on the palate it has a wonderful texture – elegant, dry yet just flows across the palate in this gorgeous, finely tannic texture. Delicate and fresh and so elegant. Delicate and very persistent. You could probably approach this before the Grèves but it has good ageing potential.
