Cuilleron Côte Rotie Bassenon 2009 Bottle (75cl)
With the 2009 Bassenon, Domaine Yves Cuilleron presents a red wine from the Côte-Rôtie appellation in the northern Rhône Valley. This cuvée is a co-fermented blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier. It comes from a 2-hectare terraced plot with a southern exposure on granitic soils. Bassenon takes its name from the stream that flows at the foot of the plot, a geographical landmark unique to this estate cuvée.

Domaine Yves Cuilleron
La Cave Yves Cuilleron is a family-run estate based in Verlieu, in the commune of Chavanay, in the northern Rhône. Taken over by Yves Cuilleron in 1987, the estate now cultivates vines across several appellations, notably Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Saint-Péray and Crozes-Hermitage. The winemaking process is overseen directly by Yves Cuilleron and relies in particular on hand-harvesting, natural yeasts and ageing methods tailored to the wines.

Histoire du domaine
The estate was founded in 1920 by Claude Cuilleron, Yves Cuilleron’s grandfather. From 1947 onwards, the estate began selling part of its production in bottles. Antoine Cuilleron, Yves’s uncle, then took over the management of the estate from 1960. In 1987, Yves Cuilleron took over the family estate, which at the time comprised 3.5 hectares of vineyards in Condrieu and Saint-Joseph in Chavanay. He produced his first vintage of Côte-Rôtie in 1988. A new winery was built in Verlieu in 1992, and subsequently extended in 1999. In 1996, Yves Cuilleron founded Les Vins de Vienne with Pierre Gaillard and François Villard. In 2004, he helped establish the Vitis Vienna association, dedicated to promoting the Seyssuel vineyards and campaigning for their recognition as an appellation. The estate acquired vineyards in Saint-Péray and Cornas in 2006, followed by red Crozes-Hermitage in 2012 and white Crozes-Hermitage in 2014. A new winery was built in 2015 to support the development of single-vineyard winemaking. The Cave Yves Cuilleron now covers 90 hectares, and Yves Cuilleron remains its owner and is directly responsible for winemaking.
Bassenon
Bassenon is a red Côte-Rôtie marketed separately by Yves Cuilleron. It comes from the south of the appellation, on the Côte Blonde, from vines on the Semons hillside planted on gneiss and granite terroirs. Its overall blend predominantly combines Syrah with a proportion of Viognier.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name comes from the Bassenon stream flowing at the foot of the Semons hillside in Tupin-et-Semons; according to the estate's technical sheet, Bassenon is not the name of a lieu-dit.
- Style of the cuvée
- A generally fine, silky, and fresh expression of southern Côte-Rôtie, combining the fruit of Syrah with the floral nuances of Viognier, featuring an elegant tannic structure and good aging potential.
- Position within the range
- A signature southern Côte-Rôtie from the appellation, complementary to the estate's other Côte-Rôtie expressions.
Histoire de la cuvée
The cuvée is documented in older vintages at least since the mid-1990s, but no sufficiently conclusive source consulted establishes its first vintage with certainty. Its identity remains tied to the southern vines of Côte-Rôtie and the Bassenon stream located just below the hillside.
