Château Pape Clément

Château Pape Clément is an estate in Pessac, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, whose winemaking history dates back to 1252. Its name refers to Bertrand de Goth, who became Pope Clement V in 1305. The estate, owned by Bernard Magrez, produces red and white wines; its reds have been classified among the Graves crus classés since 1959.

Histoire du domaine

The estate’s first grape harvest took place in 1252, at a time when the land belonged to the de Goth family. Bertrand de Goth became Archbishop of Bordeaux before being elected Pope in 1305 under the name Clement V, to whom the château owes its name. After the French Revolution, church property was confiscated and the estate passed through the hands of several owners. In the 19th century, Jean-Baptiste Clerc expanded the vineyard. A severe hailstorm in 1937 contributed to the estate’s decline. Paul Montagne acquired it in 1939 and set about restoring it with the support of the oenologist Émile Peynaud. In 1959, Château Pape Clément’s red wines were classified among the Graves crus classés. Bernard Magrez took over the management of the estate in 1983, before becoming its owner in 1985. Under his ownership, the barrel cellar was brought into use in 2003 and the fermentation cellar was renovated in 2007. The vineyard now comprises plots of red and white grape varieties within the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

The 2009 Pape Clement Blanc is an absolutely remarkable wine, which is not a surprise given what this historic estate has done in both white and red over the last 20 years. Their white wine, an intriguing blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Semillon, 16% Sauvignon Gris and the rest Muscadelle, comes from 7.5 acres of pure gravelly soil. An exquisite nose of honeysuckle, tropical fruit, pineapple, green apples, and orange and apricot marmalade soar from the glass. Great acidity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a texture more akin to great grand cru white Burgundy put this wine in a class by itself. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were others who also think this is pure perfection in white Bordeaux. I tasted this wine four separate times and gave it a perfect score three of the four times. It is one of most exquisite dry white I have ever tasted from anywhere – period. Certainly the founder of Pape Clement, Bertrand de Goth, would be happy with his decision to plant a vineyard here in 1305. Pure genius!

This really is phenomenal. It shows subtle complexity with dried lemons, papaya, and hints of vanilla. What blows you away is the palate. It is so dense yet agile with amazing tension and a bright finish. It builds and builds in the finish. Superb. Speechless. Drink or hold.
