Histoire du domaine

The lands of Bages are first mentioned as early as the 16th century, and the Domaine de Bages was gradually established by the Déjean families. In 1728, Pierre Déjean and his son Bernard sold the estate to Pierre Drouillard, Treasurer-General of Guyenne. Thomas Lynch acquired the estate in 1750 following his marriage to Pierre Drouillard’s daughter. His son, Michel Lynch, expanded the estate, notably through drainage works and the selection of grape varieties. The estate remained in the Lynch family for around seventy-five years, retaining the family name. It was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification. In the 19th century, under the ownership of the Cayrou family and with the advice of Pierre Skawinski, the estate adopted a gravity-fed wine-making system. In the 1930s, General Félix de Vial leased Lynch-Bages to Jean-Charles Cazes, who acquired the property in 1939. André Cazes subsequently revitalised and expanded the vineyard from the 1960s onwards, whilst Jean-Michel Cazes modernised the facilities from 1975 and developed the estate’s international presence. Jean-Charles Cazes took over the family estates in 2007; the renovated winery, designed in collaboration with architect Chien Chung Pei, welcomed its first vintage to be vinified with the 2020 vintage.

My last bottle of the 1982 Lynch-Bages continues to drink very well indeed, exhibiting rich aromas of crème de cassis, blackberries, licorice, sweet loamy soil and cigar wrapper. Full-bodied, broad and unctuous, it's fleshy and textural, with sweet, ripe tannins, low acidity and a long, expansive finish. It's fully mature, but it hasn't evolved much over the last decade; so, there appears to be no danger of imminent decline.

This shows intense aromas of mint, lead pencil and currants that follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a finish with tension and freshness. Drink now.

This, served at Cordeillan Bages but apparently bought by my host Jean-Charles Cazes in the UK because their own stocks had run so low, was an even better bottle than the one from my own cellar (bought en primeur) opened less than a month previously. A beautiful wine that was minty fresh, fragrant, sweet and gorgeous. I ended up writing 'gorgeous' twice and 'beautiful' once, I see from my handwritten notes. Cazes reminded us that the yield for this wine was a massive 72 hl/ha.
