Histoire du domaine

The origins of the Léoville estate date back to the 17th century. Before passing to the de Las Cases family, it belonged to several French noble families. The aftermath of the French Revolution led to its division between 1826 and 1840. Château Léoville Las Cases was then formed from three-fifths of the former estate, comprising its heartland. It was classified as a second growth in the 1855 classification. Pierre-Jean, Adolphe and Gabriel de Las Cases succeeded one another at the head of the estate until 1900. That year, Théophile Skawinski acquired a share of the estate and became its estate manager. Le Clos du Marquis was created in 1902 from plots distinct from those of the grand vin. Since the late 19th century, the estate has been managed by the same family, now represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, the sole owner. Umberto Marino currently serves as cellar master there.

As one might expect, this is a brilliant wine, but it remains shockingly young, even for the fast evolving 1990s. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic, nearly restrained set of aromatics that includes notions of sweet black cherries, black currants, lead pencil, and wet stones. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, and while technically low in acidity, there is a freshness, delineation, and classicism in this full-throttle, rich, concentrated, impeccable 1990. While still youthful, it is easy to appreciate despite its substantial tannins. It is not quite as backward as the 1990 Lafite Rothschild or 1990 Latour. Anticipated maturity: now-2035. this is so classic, with a beautiful nose of blackcurrants, bell pepper, lead pencil, herbs, blackcurrant leaf and tobacco. Elegant and very fine. Medium-bodied with silky tannins. Turns to sweet berry fruit after a while. This has real Bordeaux soul. Drink or hold.

The nose of this wine had a very light whiff of TCA but not enough to distract from what is clearly a monumental wine, enlivened by the richness of the vintage. So spicy and positively throbbing with life and potential. So long!
