Château La Mission Haut Brion

Château La Mission Haut-Brion is a Graves Cru Classé situated in Talence, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, opposite Château Haut-Brion. Its 29.18-hectare vineyard, divided between red and white grape varieties, has been managed by Domaine Clarence Dillon since 1983. Histoire du domaine

The history of La Mission Haut-Brion dates back to the 16th century: Arnaut de Lestonnac is identified as the estate’s first owner in 1540. In 1664, Madame de Lestonnac bequeathed the property to the Lazarist priests of the Congregation of the Mission, from whom the estate took its name. They developed the vineyard and had the Notre-Dame d’Aubrion chapel built at the end of the 17th century. Confiscated during the French Revolution, the estate was sold as national property in 1792 to the Bordeaux businessman Martial-Victor Vaillant. It was acquired in 1821 by Célestin Coudrin-Chiapella, whose family, having come from Louisiana, continued to develop the estate throughout the 19th century. The château’s wines were awarded a gold medal at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862. Frédéric Woltner bought the estate in 1919; his son Henri then took over its management until his death in 1974, after which Francis Dewavrin took over. Domaine Clarence Dillon acquired Château La Mission Haut-Brion, along with the associated estates Laville Haut-Brion and La Tour Haut-Brion, in 1983. The vineyards of La Tour Haut-Brion were integrated into those of La Mission from the 2006 vintage onwards, whilst the wine from Laville Haut-Brion was renamed Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc from the 2009 vintage onwards. The estate is now owned by Domaine Clarence Dillon; Florence Forgas serves as cellar master there alongside technical director Jean-Philippe Masclef.

Tasted at the château, the 1986 La Mission Haut-Brion is a blend of 38% Merlot and 62% Cabernet Sauvignon. A bit like the 1996 La Mission, there is something sedate about the bouquet, nicely defined if not as complex as others, and certainly it would pale against subsequent vintages such as the 1989 or 2005. Delicate black fruit, sage and rosemary at first, then cola-tinged briary and dried fig. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy entry. This feels a little brusque and quite ferrous in the mouth, missing some depth on the mid-palate, leading to a very foursquare finish that I feel is beginning to dry out a little. This was a period soon after Clarence Dillon's acquisition of the estate from the Woltner family and the vineyard was being reconstituted. Suffice to say, that tells in this decent but to be candid, slightly dour Pessac-Leognan. Tasted July 2016.

I tasted this at a fun restaurant in Bordeaux called Le Père Ouvrard in the Bouscaut neighborhood. The 1986 was a great vintage for the Médoc but less so for Pessac-Léognan, partly because an early torrent of rains wrought havoc for wines with more merlot in their blends. Many of the 1986s are starting to fall apart, but the La Mission was holding on nicely with dark berries, currants, iodine and oyster shell. It was full-bodied, very soft, very silky and ended with a fresh finish. It’s a wine definitely on a holding pattern.

Dark and rather gamey – possibly even a tad bretty at first. Though it did somehow clean itself up in the glass after 30-40 minutes. Lacks the freshness and definition of the Haut-Brion 1986 tasted alongside. Certainly exotic and very ripe.
