Histoire du domaine
The estate was formerly known as the noble house of Bayle. It was acquired in 1766 by the Guiraud family, Protestant wine merchants from Bordeaux, who gave it its name. The estate is listed among the Premiers Grands Crus in the 1855 classification. Between 1861 and 1932, it belonged to the Bernard family, then to the Maxwell family by marriage; this period saw, in particular, the renovation of the cellars and the château, as well as the expansion of the estate. Paul César Rival acquired the property in 1932. Following the damage and decline caused by the war years, the estate was taken over in 1981 by the Narby family, who undertook a restoration of the facilities and the vineyard. Xavier Planty then managed the estate for several decades. From 1996 onwards, the estate developed practices that promoted biodiversity and achieved organic farming certification in 2011 – a first amongst the 1855 Classified First Growths. In 2006, the château was acquired by a consortium comprising, notably, Robert Peugeot, Olivier Bernard, Stephan von Neipperg and Xavier Planty. Matthieu Gufflet became the majority shareholder of Financière Guiraud in 2021; Sandrine Garbay now manages the estate, whilst Matis Bouscarra Gaubert is the cellar master.
