Histoire du domaine

The name Destieux derives from the hamlet of ‘Des Yeux’, situated on the heights of Saint-Hippolyte, from where the vineyard overlooks the Dordogne valley. The Dauriac family acquired Château Destieux in 1971. Christian Dauriac, an oenologist and biological scientist, carried out the first wine-making on this estate in 1976. The estate’s cellars and equipment were modernised in 1999. In 2006, the château was awarded Grand Cru Classé status in the Saint-Émilion classification. Christian Dauriac remains the owner of Vignobles Dauriac, which also comprises Château Montlisse in Saint-Émilion and Château La Clémence in Pomerol. Winemaking and technical management are now the responsibility of Baptiste Munné, technical director, cellar master and vineyard manager.

The 2018 Destieux has a deep purple-black color and scents of cedar and cinnamon toast to begin over a cherry preserves, chocolate mint and plum pudding core with a waft of bay leaves. The full-bodied palate is concentrated with firm, rounded tannins and low acidity, finishing a little warm and spicy.

Rich aromas of dried blueberry, walnut, dark chocolate, tobacco and cigar box on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins. Fantastic depth of fruit here with well integrated wood and tannins. Mushrooms and fresh berries at the end. One of the best in years from here. Try from 2024.

On a hill, 50-year-old vines: 66% Merlot and 17% of each Cabernet on clay limestone. Fancy vinification with malo in barrel. Aged for 12 to 18 months in 100% new barrels. Michel Rolland consults. Sister property to La Clémence in Pomerol. Sweet and 'thick'. Perfect for those who seek mass and drama but the tannins are pretty uncomfortable on the finish. Everything but the kitchen sink here. I wouldn't broach a bottle for quite a while. But it's certainly ambitious in a Pavie sort of way.
