Chapoutier La Mordoree 2005
Chapoutier La Mordorée 2005 is a Syrah red wine produced by Domaine Chapoutier in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, within the Rhône Valley. This single-parcel cuvée comes from a plot located on the edge of the Côte Blonde, on chloritic and ferruginous mica-schist mixed with loess. Sourced from vines with an average age of over 60 years, it is hand-harvested, entirely destemmed, and vinified in concrete vats. Only free-run juice is retained, prior to 14 to 18 months of ageing in 225-litre oak barrels.

Histoire du domaine
The company’s origins date back to 1808, with the founding of Calvet et Compagnie on Rue de l’Hermitage in Tain. In 1897, Marius Chapoutier went into partnership with Rodolphe Delépine to form Delépine et Chapoutier, which at that time exported its wines to the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Following Delépine’s departure in 1922, Marius renamed the company Chapoutier et Compagnie. In 1928, he acquired the La Ciboise estate, then in 1929 had a new winery built at the foot of the Hermitage hill. On his death in 1937, his son Marc succeeded him. In 1955, Marc renamed the company M. Chapoutier. Michel Chapoutier took over the management of the company in 1990, having launched the first single-vineyard selections in 1989. The conversion of the vineyard to biodynamic farming began at that time. Under his leadership, the company gradually acquired estates and vineyards in Australia from 1998, in Roussillon in 2000, in Portugal in 2007, and subsequently in Alsace and Spain, amongst other places. Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier have joined Michel and Corinne Chapoutier in the family business; Clément Bartschi currently serves as cellar master there.
La Mordorée
La Mordorée is a red Côte-Rôtie from the Sélections Parcellaires range of M. Chapoutier. Crafted exclusively from Syrah, it blends grapes from the lieux-dits Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, in the heart of the slopes. These two terroirs notably combine gneiss and chloritic and ferruginous micaschists.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1989
- Style of the cuvée
- An ample, dense and elegant Côte-Rôtie, structured by silky tannins, with a generally floral, spicy profile marked by black fruits, olive and smoky nuances. It is a wine for long-term cellaring that seeks a balance between the depth of Côte Brune and the floral expression of Côte Blonde.
- Position within the range
- High-end Sélection Parcellaire by M. Chapoutier in Côte-Rôtie.
Histoire de la cuvée
The cuvée has been documented since the 1989 vintage. It has consistently featured among the estate's Sélections Parcellaires and today reflects the combination of the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune terroirs.
