Histoire du domaine
The Abbatucci family's winemaking presence in Corse is long-standing, but the vineyard at the origin of the current estate took shape in the 1920s, when Jacques Abbatucci planted five hectares of sciaccarellu, niellucciu, barbarossa, and carcajolo. His son Antoine succeeded him in the 1960s, expanding the plantings and building an ampelographic collection dedicated to ancient Corsican grape varieties; between 1960 and 1970, the estate thus acted as an ampelographic station, contributing to the study and preservation of island varieties. Jean-Charles Abbatucci took over management of the estate in 1992 and converted the entire vineyard to biodynamics starting in 2000, while developing massal selections, top-grafting, and soil cultivation using horses. Today, he continues this work with his daughter Faustine, both being presented by the estate as owners. The Collection cuvées, notably Diplomate d’Empire, Général de la Révolution, and Ministre Impérial, pay tribute to the military and political figures of their family.
Il Cavaliere Diplomate d'Empire
Diplomate d’Empire is a white wine from the Collection range, comprising the estate's emblematic and confidential cuvées. It blends several ancient Corsican grape varieties from the estate's ampelographic collection, notably Vermentino, Brustiano, Bianco Gentile, Genovese, and Rossola Bianca. The best lots are aged in demi-muids on the lees, then blended and refined in stainless steel vats.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- Tribute to Don Jacques-Pascal Abbatucci, known as "Il Cavaliere", an ancestor of the family, close to Napoleon Bonaparte and a diplomat in Naples under the Empire.
- Cuvée creation year
- 2006
- Style of the cuvée
- A great, ample, and structured Corsican white, combining richness of texture, freshness, saline minerality, and persistence, with the complexity brought by the blend of ancient grape varieties and aging in demi-muids.
- Position within the range
- Emblematic and confidential white cuvée from the prestige Collection range.
Histoire de la cuvée
The cuvée stems from the work undertaken on ancient Corsican grape varieties, studied at the estate since the 1960s. The first Collection cuvées were created in 2006 to showcase these varieties and pay tribute to the Abbatucci ancestors. Diplomate d’Empire historically bears the full name "Diplomate d’Empire – Il Cavaliere – Don Jacques-Pascal Abbatucci".
