Taylor Fladgate
Founded in 1692, Taylor Fladgate is an independent family-owned house specializing exclusively in Port wines. Histoire du domaine
The house traces its origins back to 1692, when English merchant Job Bearsley established himself in Portugal. In 1744, Bartholomew Bearsley became the first British wine merchant to acquire a property in the Douro, at Lugar das Lages. Joseph Taylor joined the company in 1816, followed by John Fladgate and Morgan Yeatman; a deed signed in 1838 established the name Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman. Following the devastation of oidium and phylloxera in the 19th century, the house acquired Quinta de Vargellas in 1893 and brought its various parts together in 1896, initiating a major vineyard reconstruction. Under the impetus of Frank, Dick, and Stanley Yeatman, Vargellas became a center for viticultural experimentation, notably featuring the creation of plots planted separately by grape variety in 1927. Taylor launched the dry white port Chip Dry in 1934, acquired the house of Fonseca in 1949, and created the modern Late Bottled Vintage style, commercialized in 1970 with the 1965 vintage. Quinta de Terra Feita was purchased in 1974 and Quinta do Junco in 1997. David Guimaraens joined the winemaking team in 1990; the 1994 Vintage was the first declared vintage crafted under his supervision. Today, he is technical director and head winemaker of The Fladgate Partnership, while Adrian Bridge, appointed managing director of Taylor Fladgate in 2000, leads the family group.
