Domaine Romanee Conti Corton Charlemagne 2019

The Corton-Charlemagne 2019 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is a white Grand Cru Burgundy wine, originating from the Aloxe-Corton appellation and crafted from Chardonnay. This cuvée comes from the Corton Charlemagne parcel and marks the domaine's inaugural release. The Wine Advocate awards it 95/100 and recommends drinking between 2027 and 2055. The critic describes an ample and textured white, driven by brisk acidity, a chalky framework, and a long, saline finish, in a style that is both powerful and mineral.

Histoire du domaine

The history of the Romanée-Conti vineyard dates back to the Priory of Saint-Vivant, founded in the early 10th century, which owned land in Vosne during the Middle Ages. The future vineyard was known as the Cros des Cloux before being leased in perpetuity to Claude Cousin in 1584. It then passed to Jacques Venot in 1621, and subsequently to the de Croonembourg family; the name ‘Romanée’ first appears in historical records in 1651. In 1760, Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, acquired the Romanée, with which his name remains associated. The vineyard was confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently sold at auction in 1794. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought La Romanée-Conti in 1869 and merged it with other wine-growing estates he already owned. Following a series of family transfers, the Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was incorporated on 31 July 1942, when Henri Leroy acquired Jacques Chambon’s shares. The estate acquired La Tâche in 1933, vineyards in Montrachet in 1963, and became the tenant of Romanée-Saint-Vivant Marey-Monge in 1966, before the partners acquired it in 1984. It also took on a lease for 2.2746 hectares of Corton in 2008, then entered into a sharecropping arrangement for 2.9132 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 2018. Since 2021, the estate has been co-managed by Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal; Alexandre Bernier oversees the cellar and winemaking.

Corton Charlemagne (Aloxe Corton)

Corton-Charlemagne is a white Grand Cru appellation whose demarcated parcel area occupies the upper part of the montagne de Corton, across Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny. Histoire de la parcelle

A vineyard on the montagne de Corton was given in 775 by Charlemagne to the collegiate church of Saint-Andoche de Saulieu and remained part of its estate for approximately a millennium. The Corton-Charlemagne appellation was recognized by the decree of July 31, 1937. Its current parcel area is based on a delimitation approved by the INAO on September 20, 1984.
