Histoire du domaine
The locality of Camensac is recorded on old maps of the commune of Saint-Laurent-Médoc, where vines were already present in the early 18th century. In 1799, following the break-up of the Beychevelle seigneury during the Revolution, Joseph Popp acquired Camensac at an auction. The Popp family, wine merchants of Hamburg origin based in Bordeaux, subsequently retained ownership of the estate throughout the 19th century. Under Bruno Popp, the cellars were extended in 1860. The château was classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 Médoc wine classification. The estate changed hands in 1887, before being acquired by Count Lahens in 1906. Paul and Albert Cuvelier became the owners in 1912. In 1964, Elysée and Henri Forner took over a largely neglected vineyard, carried out replanting and modernised the estate with the support of the oenologist Émile Peynaud. Jean Merlaut and Céline Villars-Foubet bought the château in 2005. The estate is now managed by Jean-Pierre Foubet, with Christian Alquié as cellar master.
