Histoire du domaine

The Château Belgrave site corresponds to the former Darrouilh farmstead, where a hunting lodge stood during the reign of Louis XV. In 1796, upon the death of the wine merchant Joseph Brisson, the estate was divided amongst his heirs. It appears in Guillaume Lawton’s 1815 classification under the name Brisson. In 1823, the doctor Godefroi Bartelemi Coutanceau acquired the Darrous farmstead and developed the vineyard. The Bordeaux wine merchant Bruno Devès took over and restructured the property in 1851, building the outbuildings, cellars and fermentation vats, and commissioning the construction of the present-day residence on the site of the former hunting lodge. The estate was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855 under the name Coutanceau. Marcel Alibert acquired it in 1898 and, at the start of the 20th century, established the name Belgrave; he also contributed to the creation of the Syndicat des Crus Classés du Médoc in 1901. Since 1979, the estate has been managed by the Dourthe company. The second wine, Diane de Belgrave, was created in 1987. Guillaume Singier joined the estate as cellar master in 2026.

The 2022 Belgrave offers a delicate, complex bouquet of cassis, mulberries, licorice and spices mingled with menthol notes. Medium to full-bodied, harmonious and round, it has a fleshy core of fruit, velvety tannins and a long, delicate finish. This is a real success at this address.

Very perfumed with blackberry, violet and ink character following through to a medium body and extremely integrated tannins that are lightly chewy and really long. I am impressed with its cool nature and quality phenolics. A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon, 39% merlot and 4% petit verdot. Some of the cabernet and merlot are co-fermented. Needs three to five years of bottle age to begin.

Ripe and sleek, with delicious boysenberry and black cherry puree notes gilded with ink and iris accents. There's a nice tug of tarry earth at the tail end. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2031. 16,666 cases made, 450 cases imported. Published on April 30, 2025

Diam 10 closure. Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Bloody nose. Sweet and relatively soft. Perhaps not as ambitious as some but a very nice drink! GV
