Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge 1990 Bouteille (75cl) -3cm ELA

The 1990 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, produced by Emmanuel Reynaud in the Rhône Valley, is a red wine composed of 98% Grenache. The Wine Advocate awards it 99-100/100, Jancis Robinson 19.5/20, and James Suckling 98/100. Critics describe an ample, dense, and very long wine, wedding a rich texture to a persistent freshness, with expressions of ripe fruit, spices, licorice, and tobacco. Published drinking windows: 2003-2013 for The Wine Advocate and 2005-2019 for Jancis Robinson.

Emmanuel Reynaud

Emmanuel Reynaud managed the family-run group comprising Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Fonsalette in Lagarde-Paréol and Château des Tours in Sarrians. These estates in the Rhône Valley produce, in particular, wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, Vacqueyras and IGP Vaucluse. Since Emmanuel Reynaud’s death in November 2025, the running of the estate has been taken over by his sons, Benoît and Louis-Damien Reynaud.

Histoire du domaine

The origins of the estate date back to 1880, when Albert Reynaud, a notary in the Avignon region, acquired a mixed-farming property in the hamlet of Rayas, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. His son, Louis Reynaud, succeeded him in 1920, expanded the vineyard’s presence and began bottling the wines on the estate. Louis acquired the Domaine des Tours in Sarrians in 1935, followed by Château de Fonsalette in Lagarde-Paréol in 1945. On Louis’s death in 1978, Jacques Reynaud took over the management of Rayas and Fonsalette, whilst his brother Bertrand retained the Domaine des Tours. Emmanuel Reynaud, Bertrand’s son, was already managing Château des Tours when he took over Rayas and Fonsalette following the death of his uncle Jacques in 1997. He then brought the family’s various estates and their labels under a single management, including Château Rayas, Pignan, Château de Fonsalette, La Pialade, Château des Tours and Domaine des Tours. Emmanuel Reynaud passed away in November 2025. Benoît Reynaud has been chairman of Château Rayas since February 2026 and Louis-Damien Reynaud is its managing director; the sources consulted confirm their involvement in taking over the business, but do not allow us to attribute with certainty sole responsibility for the winemaking across the entire portfolio to either of them.

As for the 1990, I have had the good fortune to drink nearly three cases, and it has been one of the triumphs of my cellar. A mere 1-2 years ago, I enjoyed a succession of perfect “100 point” bottles, but the last several bottles have merited 96-100 points, perhaps revealing the direction of this wine’s evolution. Nevertheless, this is riveting stuff. A legendary Rayas made from extremely ripe Grenache, it exhibits notes of over-ripe kirsch, raspberries, cherries, game, licorice, and tobacco. This unctuously-textured, thick, juicy Chateauneuf must tip the scale at 15.5% alcohol. It is truly a Rhone Valley monument. Owners, however, should consume it over the next 8-10 years. This shows a unique peat and dried mango and candle wax character. Full-bodied, layered, very long and rich. Dense. Oily. Drink up.

Mature ruby with a pale rim. Sweet and rich and vibrant. Heady and medicinal in a thoroughly good way. Great freshness. Jewels and spice. Bravo! Still lots of life!
