Rayas Chateau Fonsalette Rouge Cuvee Syrah 2000 Bottle (75cl) FD

Château de Fonsalette Cuvée Syrah 2000, produced by Emmanuel Reynaud and associated with Château Rayas, is a Rhône Valley red wine made from 100% Syrah. The Wine Advocate awards it 91/100, suggesting a drinking window between 2007 and 2018. The publication describes a highly concentrated and powerful wine with notes of blackberry, liquorice, truffle, mushroom, and a gamey touch, in a dense and still reserved style.

Emmanuel Reynaud

Emmanuel Reynaud managed the family-run group comprising Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Fonsalette in Lagarde-Paréol and Château des Tours in Sarrians. These estates in the Rhône Valley produce, in particular, wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, Vacqueyras and IGP Vaucluse. Since Emmanuel Reynaud’s death in November 2025, the running of the estate has been taken over by his sons, Benoît and Louis-Damien Reynaud.

Owner
Famille Reynaud

Histoire du domaine

The origins of the estate date back to 1880, when Albert Reynaud, a notary in the Avignon region, acquired a mixed-farming property in the hamlet of Rayas, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. His son, Louis Reynaud, succeeded him in 1920, expanded the vineyard’s presence and began bottling the wines on the estate. Louis acquired the Domaine des Tours in Sarrians in 1935, followed by Château de Fonsalette in Lagarde-Paréol in 1945. On Louis’s death in 1978, Jacques Reynaud took over the management of Rayas and Fonsalette, whilst his brother Bertrand retained the Domaine des Tours. Emmanuel Reynaud, Bertrand’s son, was already managing Château des Tours when he took over Rayas and Fonsalette following the death of his uncle Jacques in 1997. He then brought the family’s various estates and their labels under a single management, including Château Rayas, Pignan, Château de Fonsalette, La Pialade, Château des Tours and Domaine des Tours. Emmanuel Reynaud passed away in November 2025. Benoît Reynaud has been chairman of Château Rayas since February 2026 and Louis-Damien Reynaud is its managing director; the sources consulted confirm their involvement in taking over the business, but do not allow us to attribute with certainty sole responsibility for the winemaking across the entire portfolio to either of them.

Cuvée

Cuvée Syrah

La Cuvée Syrah is a red Côtes-du-Rhône distinct from the blended red of Château de Fonsalette. Crafted exclusively from Syrah, it comes from the Fonsalette vineyards and is produced only in certain vintages.

Cuvée creation year
1978
Style of the cuvée
A southern Syrah that is generally deep, spicy, and structured, characterized by its freshness, elegance, and a profile that can evoke the more northern expressions of the grape variety.
Position within the range
A rare single-varietal red, distinct from the blended Fonsalette red within a range limited to three wines.

Histoire de la cuvée

Created by Jacques Reynaud, uncle and predecessor of Emmanuel Reynaud at Fonsalette, this cuvée was bottled for the first time with the 1978 vintage. Emmanuel Reynaud continued its production after taking over Château de Fonsalette in 1997.

A monster effort, the deep purple-colored 2000 Fonsalette Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Syrah reveals characteristics of animal fur, licorice, blackberries, and mushroom/truffle notes. With superb concentration, huge body, and a monolithic, backward personality, it will be at its best between 2007-2018. A disclaimer is in order concerning the following tasting notes. While the bottled 2000s were easy to taste, the 2001 barrel tastings at Rayas were challenging because there was no electricity in the cellars. Rayas was one of many estates where electricity had been cut off by the floods of September 8 and 9. Hence, the tasting was conducted by flashlight ... a first in my 25 years of experience. It was hard to get a grasp of the barrel samples' colors when viewed by flashlight, but they appeared to be light to medium ruby. However, darkly pigmented wines are rarely produced at this domaine. There have been some deep-colored vintages of Rayas (1995, 1990, and 1989), but most are surprisingly weak in color, yet intense in flavor.
